You can put pegs or clamps in the sliding deadman at different heights to support long timbers or panels held in the vice so they are supported when you push down to plane or saw. A picture speaks a thousand words, here somebody else using one as the bench is currently drying after a coat of Osmo Polyx hard wax oil/ I may put some hole in the right hand leg, same reason

I'm using a Benchcrafted criss-cross to keep the vice chop parallel to the leg. The bottom parts of the cross run in slots you route in the leg and chop, there are steel wear plates in the back of the slots. Here's the instructions if you want to know how it works.

Ok , I have some 20 mm linear guides and shafting which Ihave been considering using , the cross mech are expensive, Ihave a 30 mm bench screw and brass nut I removed from a joiners bench in Grytviken South Georgia in 1982, still haven't got around to using it yet,

Next job, a bit of leather on the vice chop, suede side up, to improve grip. It only goes on the vice chop, not the bench as you want the bench to be flat and people find it offers sufficient grip on one side. I left that part of the vice chop un-oiled so I glued it on then touched up the chop with oil.
Next job is to make the tool tray come planing stop that fits in the gap in the bench. First I need to plane one side of the walnut plank flat, so the sliding deadman comes in handy.
I've run out of time today, work calling, plus clamping the plank helps the leather stick as the glue cures and I have a few oil touch ups that are still wet that I don't want covering in shavings so next weekend I shall hopefully complete it. At lunch time I may spend a few minutes clearing up. That clamp on the deadman may get in the way when planing so may just use a dog in the hole and clamp it to the deadman from behind.
I've also started on the kitchen refit now, so the wife is happy too
