Possible problem with spray gun.....and practice panel

I did adjust the gun numerous times. Albeit not just doing one pass like you suggest. As previously mentioned it's the first time I've painted a large panel so actually was focused on how the hell to do that as well as the gun, pressure and everything else.

I didn't expect to get it in one hit, I'm well aware that the paint is on too thick and that if you got a finish like that you'd be annoyed. But I've got more practice panels and I've got more time.

How about spraying with different settings and paint thickness this is how we learn to get a better finish,ie do one run across the panel,adjust the gun,thin the paint and do another run and so on and so on,eventually we will see at least one run that is better than the rest and we can then use that paint thickness,gun adjustment as a guide.

I always do a few practise strokes on some cardboard (or the back of the shed door) before I commit to a panel or whatever I'm painting. One stroke across wouldn't tell me enough to alter the gun settings, I have to do a couple of overlaps to get an idea of cover.

all my gallon metal cans are painted a diffrent colour as said a test piece 1st

Excellent advice, unless you are paying for the paint!

Sorry but I don't see the logic in that statement,I mean first time welders need a bit of experience to overcome their fears of making a hash of it....what this means is the sundries used to weld will become expensive as we progress until we have accumulated enough experience in achieving a good acceptable finish....spray painting is no different,you can't spray thin air....well you can but it disperses.

easy. u need practice on a particular paint on some scrap before u paint the real thing and make a balls up of it

i wouldnt use card board or wood for the simple fact it soaks in and you cant see what finish the gun has achieved.

the point norsa is trying to make is paint is expensive probably around £36 a litre with thinner and activator and you will spray a litre of paint well before you would use a box of rods

get some cheap paint and thinners and paint something that isnt important , get the feel of things then use the real thing

Well I ain't doing it on a regular basis,just me plastics on me bike so half a litre of Celly will do so another half would get me up and running.

I must admit I have had a bit of a go with spraying many moons ago but that was with proffessional gear in a mechanics/engineering training workshop,sprayed me Lambretta back then and was real good job.

^^^ Come on pal, I'm learning here! The light is jaggered not only because of the orange peel (of which there is plenty) but because of the contour of the bonnet.

I understand what you're saying, but for my first attempt on something of this size I'm pretty happy! I know it's far far far from perfect, but that's why I've asked for help! Everyone has to start somewhere!

I'm using a Sata 3000 I picked up cheap Langy, probably cheap as the gun splutters, I took it apart and I'm going to order new needle packing tomorrow to see if that helps the gun....then I'm the one to blame for the finish!

I only asked as 35psi is about right on a HVLP gun, For a first attempt it looks ok to me, you can always flat & polish it to bring it better.
