In ep9 when Nik is welding the flange of the A panel to the wing you can clearly see him blip the trigger at the end of the weld

This project turned up on another forum yesterday so of course I watched the entire series all in one go! I feel a lot better educated but paradoxically, a little stupider after seeing some of that inventive genius at work.

I can't help on the cheap part, but it's (spray) paint which you tend to spray on metal you've cleaned ready for welding to stop it rusting. The idea is that you can stop the rust but unlike normal paint it doesn't need cleaning off before you weld.

Parker Steel do 5L of grey for £36, its what they send out their primered steel in and its 'weld through' upto a certain thickness. I've had no problems welding steel primered with it.
