Not the engine itself that's the problem - its the filter inlet - one two of my cars is at or below wheel centre line, so which ever direction you go, if the water lever is over a few inches, its going to make some expensive noises.

When I was a kid my mates dad killed his Renault Espace in a ford. He found out that the air inlet is the lowest part of the car, and situated just behind the front bumper on them

yup the air intake is about the same height as ther car cills the reason is to take in cold air to the engine not warm .

At the time of the Escort vans, BT had several damaged because the inlet was behind the bumper

Hmmm yeah same on the old Xantia 1.9 turbo diesel. A big puddle is enough to bend a rod. Been there, done that. Twice
