I got my own supplys form a couple of restaurants for WVO every month, i havnt had to buy it in for a long time at 55p from a chap i know.
If it needs rebottoming i would rather replate it than skin it over, but if i do skin it over i will use 6mm, the 10mm weighs in at around 200kg.
As for a roll over jig..mmmm....i have some good steel here lying around, 50mm box section will do it i think

Aren't pleasure type narrowboats ballasted in the bottom either with lead shot or concrete to get a decent and stable draught in the water?
If you remove the bottom plates arent you going to have to remove the ballasting temporarily until the new bottom is installed?

There's also the sills in locks to think about and the possibility of a hang up on these.
Where would you stand insurance wise if you reduced the strength of the bottom of the boat?

Back on the WVO, When my eldest was running his Unimogs and volvo truck on Filtered and heated veg oil. We used to get it somewhere near Gatwick airport, It was from a big factory, but did not have any animal fats in it at all,Collected a full tanker each time, 25,000 ltrs at 13 pence per ltr. If used for road use he had to pay 27p duty per ltr.
Most yards will over plate a pleasure boat it is only if it is licenced under MCA then metal needs removing and the patch welded in.

I will be removing all the ballast along with all the interior, its a complete refit job, the ballast is gravel or such like and its holding water, also it will be easier for my mate to unltrasoinc test it, i dont like the thought of the gravel as ballast actualey, harder to see if there is a leak anytime form anywhere, i will replace it with concrete flags.
One the WVO thing, you can use 2500l per year without paying VAT on it, all you need to do is keep a log on your mileage and how much WVO/diesel you are using, i dont think i would be using over 2500l per year on a boat either lol.
I think the laws have changed for WVO in a commercial vehicle as once you could still use it below the 2500l limit, but i heard that has now changed to any amount needs to be taxed.

I don't think I would over plate it if it was my boat, as with cars it would soon start to rot again between plates and I think would be false economy, a few years on you would be wondering how long before it springs a leak again
nice project and once done you get even more pleasure from it

It'll last about 50 years I would say. 10mm plate takes some rotting through especially in fresh water with zinc anodes fitted - even with the s***e steel of today with all that scrap melted into it

As someone has mentioned why cut out, no point, I understand on a car etc, but when you are dealing with 4,5,8 and 10 mm thick plates, it is the standard practice to overplate in any yard, our friends boat is 42 years old, and will be surveyed but we already know it will be overplated up to the waterline (in reality it is over the waterline), some of it has already been done but where it hasn't, it will be.
Gravel is a bad thing to use as ballast as you have found, it holds water, ours is paving slabs.
One base plate in our yard was 1inch thick 6'6" wide and 60plus foot long, but the average is 10mm.

I am one thats not liked to be beaten..unless SWMBO says so
and i couldnt afford to buy it in the first place untill i got an offer i would be mental not to take up, not cheap these things, well this one was
Now i see fitting a new base plate/plates is the proper way to do it, but only if its a shell, if its fitted out its to big a job with having to rip out all the interior, so a skin is best way to go.
Once i have it checked i will decide, if less than 5,5mm it will be plated there, yes i know 5.5mm but 5 is low and 6 is good`ish lol

That Lister might be an HR2, air cooled too. Bit of a thumper... 16hp@ 1500rpm if it is.

Lister does look like HR2 good solid reliable motor, ideal for this size of boat.
Some boats were only built with steel at 5mm, a type of narrowboat called a Springer is made from very thin steel but when you actually look at the boat it is not flat and the shape adds to it's strength.
Normally the base plate is not the critical point it is where the base plate meets the hull side, there should be a wearing strait, but on older boats it wears away and has to be replaced.
Start thinking about were you will moor the boat.

I dont need to worry about a mooring as its going to ne a while untill its back in the cut, and still then i know a few folk who can help out, had many a boat over the years, this is my first NB though.
I just cant wait to get it home, well to its new spot for thr rip out and refit.

Well what a week its been, i can tell you are now so happy and can now relax as the new project is in its new home for the refurb. Its been a few week of faffing to sort the crane and driver never mind the hard standing, i got my own spot at he back of a caravan storage place close to my home, about a 5 min drive., the problem was that the area i got was i need of being leveled out with a mnni digger the company had got me to do so, also they needed it for a job the need doing this week. Well the digger should of been here 2 weeks ago but it happend to arrive yesterday, 24 hrs before the boat arrival, not good timing i can say, they got a bit done but then the lads who was doing the digging had to go and do there own job in the caravan shop, i was to finish work Friday afternoon to get the sleepers down, i got there and only half the digging had been done, OMG....yes the stress had kicked in again, things never go to plan with me.
So i jumped in the digger and set to work, now i had 2hrs to move and level maybe 20ton of soil, all with a mini digger, i ran out of timefrusty.gif
So, lucky there was a customer wanting to take there caravan early so one of the employees opened up early for them so i was up at 6am, well i was awake since 2am a si couldnt sleep, i got there again to finish off and level it before 8am as this was when i had to collect the boat, so cutting it fine we did it as my mate got there at 7ish to help out. I just threw the sleepers in place on some paving slabs and away we went to meet the crane and waggon driver.
Still on edge a bit, the rest all went good and its home, i worked out from the displacement to weight 8750kg, i wasnt far off as the crane driver said it was just over 8000kg, that fitted out with the ballast of gravel.
I know it needs a new bottom and lower sides, first job is to rip it all out and remove ballast and take the engine home to see if i can rebuild it, i have just been told the engine has a loose crank shaft and thats why it was going to be scrapped, i am sure i can fix that smile.png
