Today I removed a few more parts from the engine bay.

The power steering pipes.

Heat shields.

I hope this will be the last batch for citric acid.

There are a surprising number of pipes and tubes that will need to be plated, these will all be too long for me to do at home, so I will get quotes from professional platers. If it is too expensive, I will plate the ends and then paint the main parts of the pipes.

I filed down the welded part of the inlet manifold today with the dreadnought file.

Then painted the fuel distributer. High Five (four).

I am in two minds about what to do with the oil filter cannister. It is a bit of a mess but it would be a shame to loose the legend if I were to get it vapour blasted.

Ahh, do you mean like a transparent sticker. I know someone that may be able to do that.

I found someone that may be able to make a stencil for paint, a guy that is reproducing virtually all the stickers that were used on the R107, time will tell how that goes.

Today I got back to the project, set up the plating room again.

These are all the parts I cleaned, most need plated except the top row.

I noticed this on the thermostat cover, do you think it is a poor casting or corrosion? Either way I'll look out for a replacement.

I've no idea, but what about trying to repair it using those "Lumiweld" ali rods you use with a gas torch? You've got nothing to lose and they cost pennies.

I was interested to see you put the rubber hoses in the citric acid to clean the rust from the end pieces.

Did you have to remove old plating from your parts before starting the new plating process?

If so how did you do it?

I found by accident that phosphoric acid takes zinc plating off.

If you remove the old plating before re-plating then you get a more even blemish free finish but it is not absolutely necessary, as long as the remaining zinc is not corroded. The citric acid removes rust, the yellow zinc passivation as well as the zinc itself.

I also have a pickle that will remove any remaining zinc and prepare/key the steel for plating. It is made of 100g of Sodium Fluoride, 900g of Sodium Hydrogensulphate in 10l of distilled water. Traditionally the pickle is made with hydrochloric acid, but of course you can't buy that very easily anymore. The good thing about the new alternative is it doesn't smell or have corrosive vapours like HCL acid.

I've been doing a lot of plating since Boxing day and will get finished tomorrow, I'll post some pictures of the plating then.

While getting on with the plating I did a bit of clean up on the warm up regulator and the distributor vacuum pod.

The pod is a bit rusty but is functional and a replacement is more than £100, I couldn't dip in acid to clean off the rust and zinc for plating as it's not watertight.

Instead I sanded it down and painted it.

Then on to the WUR, just circular port area that was a bit rusty.

Painted with newly plated ports.

I bought some from my local pound store. It was 15% and, something that I didn't expect, fuming. Mind you, it's been a long long time since I played with HCl.

I got a price direct from Neway, more than I expected, one cutter, 4 pilots (needed as I was on the transition size for both exhaust and inlet valve sizes), T handle and shipping $335 + import tax and handling say £40, just too expensive.

Buy ... use them , then them clean up & sell them for as much as you paid for them ?
