Pulled out my engine today

Just when I thought the job was over, I found that the drivers window switch was totally frozen, ~£30 for a second hand one.

Then took off the rear wheels of my 6 year old Golf to get new tyres fitted. It took a sledge hammer to get the wheels off, they were stuck to the hubs with corossion. The rears were still the original tyres and have never been off before.

What a state for a six year old car.

Look at the brake hose banjo bolt!!!

Sorting out this mess will be my next job.

Blame the Councils for spreading corrosive metal eating Rock salt for 5 months of the year which also eats sandstone walls that are near kerb sides.

So far I've covered 140 miles, it was 18 degC yesterday, perfect for top down driving.

I also took it to get the mixture checked a couple of days ago and by chance found a garage that knew about Bosch K-jet fuel injection. The guy who owned the garage said his father had been the service manager at one of the edinburgh dealierships and when they move to new premesis was able to inherit all the old Bosch, D-jet, K-jet and KE-jetronic testers, thats a result. There were working on an old pink Porche 944 whale tale when I arrived.

Anyway the spec says CO should be between 0.5 and 1.5%. This is what it showed (ignore the oil temp and rpm), a bit lean....

and after adjustment....

So far running great.

Out driving today I saw.

Crap weather today so back into the garage.

Today I investigated an old sound that I had hoped would be fixed with the engine rebuild.

During the rebuild I discovered I had purchased the wrong exhaust sealing rings (on the right) so reused the old ones when I re-attached the exhaust.

Here are the correct ones on the left.

I think the sound is coming from the exhaust to maifold connection.

When I removed the collar I could see that there was an exhaust gas leak.

And signs of it on one of the bolts.

So I dropped both sides of the exhaust and fitted the new sealing rings but on the right side also put a bead of high temperature sealant. The temp of the manifold is probably higher than the spec for thr silicon but I hope that its charred remains will help to improve the seal.

Cleaned up so that the silicon sealant would stick well.

All bolted back together.

I'll let the silicon set overnight and listen again tomorrow morning.

When I had a problem with sealing an aftermarket exhaust manifold to a head I put a smear of Holts Exhaust Assembly Paste on the gasket. It has worked well so far. Probably about 1000 miles on it. Just an idea if your silicone doesn't work out.

Well the engine has been running great all year. Probably got it out for its last drive this year as I saw a gritter out on the road and snow on the distant hills.
