There is an oil pressure gauge, oil filter was pre filled full, 8l of oil in in total, all 8 spark plugs out. How do you prime the pump before fitting?

The V8 rovers were always had there gears filled with Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and it encourage the pump to pick up the oil. But another trick was too over fill the sump by a couple of pints to prime the pump by turning it over until pressure was seen on the gauge
For the gear motorbike ones I have done fill with oil / lubriplate in the gears when rebuilding so the gears seal better, pick up easier.

+1 for the Vaseline on the Rovers, though I did need to explain to Mrs. Zx9 why I had put 500g of Vaseline on her shopping list.

It takes a long time to encourage a dry oil pump to start sucking as they only work when its cavities are wet or filled, even a normal oil and filter change will give you that 5 seconds heart attack before the oil light goes out. Really good battery or even a start up for 10 seconds then turn off might be the way forward, if you have used assembly grease on the crank and cam journals then that will stand a 10 second run up.

Ahh, tomorrow I will also fill the oil cooler, that should also prime the pump.

Looks like you can fill from the oil filter supply pump from cooler given that it has no none return valve from the cooler to the pumpAhh, tomorrow I will also fill the oil cooler, that should also prime the pump.

@RaceDiagnostics Having admired your work to date, I got to thinking......[always a dangerous thing

I know that some marques' franchised Dealers use examples of previous models as 'display' props in their showrooms when a new model is launched. If you have any contacts in your local Dealership it might be worthwhile mentioning your car to them [or a call to the Dealer Principal] to put forward the idea - you never know, they might pay you or strike a parts/servicing deal.....

If ever there was a suitable candidate, yours is it - some mirrors on the floor to show the underside to its best advantage etc and you're sorted.

The short story is, I am an idiot and shouldn't be trusted with a spanner.
The long story is........
It's lucky that the oil cooler has a port on the top where oil can be added.
My oil pressure kit had a suitable adaptor.
1 1/2 l of oil added.
What! The oil had found its way through all of the oil galleries and was exiting under the right cam cover which was not tightened down.
I thought "great, the pump should be primed, I will try using the starter again and I'm sure to get pressure". No! Still no oil pressure.
So next I connected the fill hose to the top of the cooler and removed the feed to the oil filter so the oil could only go back to the pump. I connected the air line and nothing happened. A total blockage between the cooler and the pump. It looked like there was a non return valve but there isn't one.
So I decided to look along the oil path from the pump to the cooler. First there is a port near the output of the oil pump.
Access is very restricted, I wasn't sure if I would gut the lower plug out due to the dip stick tube.
Got the plug out, bone dry!.
Dry in the port, on the left you can see the hard line to the oil damper (which is straight through).
Connection to the far side of the damper, dry!!
Connection to the lower port of the cooler, dry!!! WHAT, I can see in the top port the the oil cooler is full.
Right, the cooler must be blocked, so I put some air pressure into the top of the cooler.
Then got a big splatter and mess down below! The blockage cleared.
Does anyone else remember me putting this plug into the bottom of the cooler to stop it dripping.

There were plugs on the trans oil cooler but there are definitely out.

- on average about 200 miles from the ISS.
I remember one one of the big F1 teams left something in the radiator ducts and that resulted in a bit of a disaster. I think it was mclaren with Jensons car.
