In other news I’ve replaced this little lever which is quite painful to use with a big cast iron handle from an old grinding wheel facer. I’ll get some spacers made up and proper bolts etc, just a mock-up for now but it works really nicely.

Can you weld up brass?

No, you cannot weld it. Soft (plumber's) solder will be fine for that. Cleanliness is you friend when soldering. Sweat a brass washer either internally (thin one) or externally (thicker, depends on bolt length*) over the cracked area to spread the clamping load.

Anneal it before attempting to bash it back into a flatter state.

Consider making a hollow brass spacer that goes between the bottom of the carb and the top of the underside of the float bowl. Fiber washer between spacer and bowl on the inside. Then it is not possible to overtighten it.

* you can thin down the underside of the bolt head on a lathe if you need a little more length using the same bolt.

It is a bit tight to lose any space on the inside of the cockpit there, but you could do something like a boss between the face of the lever and the frame, or maybe on the outside as well to beef it up so it pokes inside like a stub axle.

I'd anneal it first, tap it down so that it's flat, then flow some soft solder over the area. If you're still having a problem cut a disc of thin brass, tin it on one side, flux the surface then drop it in and heat until the solder flows.

I’ve been advised I can use a dowty washer, these look very good for this application

Annealed using the indoor gas plant. Everyone was out...
a good thing as it stunk the kitchen out as all the sediment burnt off. I knocked it back into shape, then ground out the cracks. I’m going to take it to my friend who has a real gas plant and we’re going to silver solder it.

Both oil seals on the pto shaft are toast, full of dried oil and rust flakes. The end bearing is knackered, too. I need better circlip pliers to remove the clip to get the internal one out of the gearbox - I don’t think the clip has ever been removed.

The pto box is meant to be oil filled but, worryingly, was dry when I pulled the plug. The manual doesn’t say anything about it, so I assume it’s the same SAE50 as the main box, filled up to the side drain plug.

How do I clean the fuel tank? A box of screws and a couple of litres of petrol shaken about for a bit?

Someone else should chime in here, but I think there are trailers that you can connect to the PTO so their axle is also driven for help in muddy conditions (hazy thought that this was possible on 101 Landrover).

There is an old film set in the desert during the war. They were stuck on a sand dune and used the starting handle with the lorry in gear to gradually wind themselves out of trouble.

Land Drive made lime spreaders and trailers that drove. They were based in Dumfriesshire, think they have moved now

I got the pto box apart. This is really disgusting, I can’t tell what’s happened here but there’s rust, old grease and dirt inside something that’s meant to be filled with oil.

Following a preliminary clean... I’ll do a proper job when it’s going back together. The steel locating ball is missing, didn’t fire out so I suspect it’s been apart before and someone either didn’t realise there was one or could t bothered putting one back in.

Got these lovely Orbis circlip pliers today, they’re really good. German made, seem to be an arm of Knipex.

Oh they used to operate them here in NZ. Excellent little machines. We also use the Steyr assault rifle, too. No idea why so much Austrian gear ends up in NZ
