Recommend a blow torch

Superfire 2 - but don't leave the MAPP connected and unused for lengthy periods - it rots the seals, redndering it 'exciting' as it expels gas throught the hole just below the trigger.
And before anyone say's it doesn't - Yes - it really does.
However, - they're so good, I bought a seconf one to replace the failed one. (And no, the seal kits didn't fix it)

To be completely honest I have 3 of them and I never take the bottles off and I've never had an issue even though the oldest one is probably 15-20 years old

I bought a new bullfinch auto torch a while ago, I thought it was the terriers taters. My plumber came around to do some work, forgot his blow torch so used mine, he hated it, swore by his Rothenburger. TBH, I've tried his and can't see much difference, but I don't use one every day.

I won't say it doesn't, but what I can, categorically say, is that my torch is 15ish years old, and I've never stored it without a cylinder on it.

So it must take greater than 15 years of gas bathing to do the seals.

Or - perhaps Superfire have a few dodgy batches of seals at one point and I got unlucky? Looks as if they're still out there - somebody on another forum posting the same issue in Feb this year.

Maybe it's also because mine was stored over winter (So near freezing?) with the MAPP still on - but I'm just looking for excuses now.

If anyone wants a Superfire 2 - venting from the pressure relief valve, and a seal repair kit (Which won't fix it) I'm pretty sure they're still in the back of the garage somewhere. If I can find them, they're yours for postage costs.

i presume that was gas only and the plumber uses the map gas more

its all down to flow and how you use the blow lamp with both gasses whilst one is quicker the other one takes a little longer whilst the quicker one can also heat the pipes too hot and you can lose all of the solder all too quickly due to too much heat on the fittings

whilst the normal gas can wrap around the pipes the mapp gas tends to heat in one place a little hotter and its all down to movement of the blowlamp

My Mapp gas torch is mostly used for seized nuts. On full blast it will melt copper piping and aluminium

last time i went a few years ago now as ive swapped jobs

needed mapp gas for bolts for a friend just went in plumbers merchants and ordered a new one over the counter

old cylinder went in a milk crate whilst i was supplied with a new one

of coarse you can throw them at 10.00 a shot and just buy a new one but i think its better to have swap cannistors as they can be refilled as they have a side port as well

a good torch for in the garage with a long hose and the torch has the econimiser trigger as well . i have a 4 of them along with another 5 types

40 foot by 20 . i bought 6 cheap and got the others given have 4 oxyacetylene torches as well

I bought screw on thing from BnQ when I was around 18 . . . 30 plus years later, a lot of replaced screw on cartridges, I'm still using it. I've nearly got the hang of lighting it with a cig lighter now too . . . got given the lighter around the same time - that has been refilled a few times too!

Last used at the weekend to warm up the aluminium upper control arm on my Dodge to persuade it to let got the steel sleeved bush so I could insert a camber correction one.

depends how small the job is, I do silver soldering with mine (up to about 800c) and use burners from the tiny 3537 burner (uses 0.02kg of propane an hour) up to a 2943 burner (which uses 3.35kg or propane an hour)

These are good, different kettle of, but lucky to have fair few O2 & Maxigas cans.

Also got the hang of lighting them with a lighter and blocking the burner holes to get them to fire at the same time

Pain in the arsse on any job needing less than 3 hands.

And zero cred caramelising creme brulee at the table

i use propane on mine and the torches never get taken off the bottles because i fill them using a shrader valve that is soldered in to the bottle. been ok for the last 15 years
