Recommend a workshop vacuum cleaner please.

Resurrecting an old thread I know, but I'm in the same situation. I want a really powerful vacuum for the workshop, will probably rig up some sort of pipework with dust extraction points along the back of the workbench, so needs to be able to pull through 4-5m of duct. Not too bothered about capacity/whether it can do wet/ease of use, I just want the most powerful one on the market. What's everyone's suggestions?

And yes I like Henry's, yes they last for ever, yes they're cheap but honestly I could do better with a straw

I had a wickes one, might have been a Titan it lasted about 25 years, once used to clear some lockers from a sunken boat it filled with sea water & kept running even though water was coming out of the motor itself along with loud popping & sparking noises. Left it to dry out in the sun & it ran for another 5 years after that. I wasnt surprised when the magic smoke finally escaped.

Henry all day long.
I had several when I had a cleaning company, they do go on forever. The one I have in my house now was the one I bought when I got my first house in my early 20’s, 30 years later it’s still going strong, new hose every 10 years or so though, suction is great but with any vac change the bags long before they’re full

I try to tell my missus this but she thinks it is wasteful. It isn't, spending your time waving a vac around and it not actually doing anything is wasteful!

I got one of these second-hand for £300 a year or two back, money very well spent. I use it for anything and everything... large swarf strands it doesn't like, but everything else it's fine with... I've only emptied the bin once in 3 years

I'd reccomend anything Numatic with the twin or triple head design tbh!

They're certainly easy enough to come across so probably will just use one of them then

Depends what you want to use it for.
I do not use Henry to suck up swarf and cutting fluid from my lathes or mills.
But for sawdust and general muck or dry swarf there is nothing better.
Use cloth bags - cheap enough on Ebay.
Wash the filter occasionally in the washing machine.
Filtration is so incredible it will suck smoke out of the air from a blocked chimney.

There's a difference between the industrial "Numatic" and the home "Henry" ones, though. I have a second hand Numatic that has survived many years of abuse.

They got a few new ones at work I compared it to an old one no contest really.

I’d whole heartedly recommend any of the Neumatic line. I have George (wet/dry spray extraction carpet cleaning), a full size Henry, a cordless Henry, and a Neumatic commercial. All are great the battery Henry is not as powerful as the mains ones, was got for my late mother when her health deterioration meant the mains Henry, even with full bypass, stuck the tool to the floor and she was not able to move it! They used the cordless Henrys for cleaning the office at my last place it was approx 300 feet square. I use the Neumatic commercial in the garage for everything, grit, swarf inc cutting oil, clippings you name it and it just comes back for more.

I understand that the power has to be no more than 750 watts on a vacuum now, part of a green idea! Cut the power & take twice as long, that makes sense. It’s not as if you spent hours vacuuming anyway, far better things to cut consumption on.

Funny nothing has changed.
