Recommend a workshop vacuum cleaner please.

I know there's lots of Henry fans on here but I have one of them Vax jobbies, had mine for probably 10 years and it was given to me SH as it was a bit noisy


Used and abused in the garage for cleaning everything from cars to floors to machinery. Stick it outside and plug an extension hose for sawdust and woodchips off my saw so any dust it doesn't capture in the bag or filter is outside the garage

Still noisy but works great so not looking to change until it finally goes bang

It doesn't work well on long stringy swarf but then neither would anything with that size hose

For dust extraction you probably want something bigger

I understand that the power has to be no more than 750 watts on a vacuum now, part of a green idea! Cut the power & take twice as long, that makes sense. It’s not as if you spent hours vacuuming anyway, far better things to cut consumption on.

I have a ‘transition period’ Henry and it’s got a turbo button on it. It defaults to some pathetic power but push and hold the button and it sucks like a sucky thing.

The house one is newer and just has a blanking plate where the button should be. I wonder how easy it would be to retro fit the button.

The German (I think) ones have no eyes. It’s an EU directive so that kids won’t want to play with them as they aren’t toys

if you can get a good one they are good but there’s so many variants it’s hard.

Not applicable if the vac has wet vaccuming capabilty. I bought a Guild brand purely for dry vacuuming. Decent motor capacity, price and warrenty. No intention using it for wet vacuuming. Great. Click & Collect from Argos.

I didn’t know that, mines 1200w so a new one at 610w is like using an older one with a clogged bag, fantastic common sense, that’s meddling EU for you.

They've just bought out a new one that looks spot on... But £200 for the bare tool : /

We've got one, it's great for catching dust bunnies on hard floors but no match for a proper hoover on carpet.

Resurrecting an old thread I know, but I'm in the same situation. I want a really powerful vacuum for the workshop, will probably rig up some sort of pipework with dust extraction points along the back of the workbench, so needs to be able to pull through 4-5m of duct. Not too bothered about capacity/whether it can do wet/ease of use, I just want the most powerful one on the market. What's everyone's suggestions?

How are the various points being linked? I suspect length of any connecting pipes will be a problem. You might need to devise some of sort of 'cap' arrangement so the your vacuum isn't trying to serve all your machines at once?

I have the original version of the Lidl one @Popcorn linked to, but larger capacity? It copes with lathe swarf, mill turnings, sawdust very well.

I was going to use 40mm waste pipe. I know it doesn't seem very big, but I read somewhere that it only needs to be as big as the inlet on the vac itself, any bigger is just wasted. And yes 40mm ball valves are a thing so I was just going to stick one on each outlet and only open the one I was using at that time

I also use my twin-motor numatic to hoover up swarf and muck in the workshop but be warned that it will coat the pipe and tools with a layer of black gunge on the inside. A dunk in a dustbin part filled with caustic cleans them out but if you leave it too long it'll block up the pipework.

We’ve got a 2000w cleaner, global warming? you can smell the polar bears sweating, cleans the carpet well though.

I have been abusing the wickes wet and dry on my boat restoration, easily sucked up 350liters of water as well as used during the rust removal from the inside of the hull so about 25kg of rust. Just bought a new filter bag for it as I felt sorry for the original

The Karcher NT27 I bought last year has been excellent. Big bin and copes with everything from fine dust to swarf. Can't fault it.
