Record No3 Vice Clean Up.

Finally found a cheap vice on eBay.

It looks ok. The threaded bar is bent at the end as the handle is off and catches the vice in certain places causing a stiff point when unwinding.

How do i split it apart? Going to try and set up a tank but don't have many materials to hand we will see what i can knock together.

Nock the pin out, it will fall apart.

To de rust, all you need is a bucket. bowl or anything to hold water enough to cover the metal. Then lots of metal to surround it.

I couldn't even see the pin at the back until i put a wire brush to it. Gave it a few whacks but it won't budge. Will have another go tomorrow. (presuming you knock the pin out from underneath)

Went to a couple of supermarkets to find some washing soda but could not find any. Is there anything else i could use?

Try letting the pin area soak in a good dowsing of PlusGas for a while to help with extraction. Do you have a bigger hammer.....?

Don't have any plusgas i have sprayed some wd40 on there (its all i have).

Bicarb or caustic soda, (usual handling & mixing cautions apply), will both do the job fine.

With regards the pin, a few taps side to side at the top end may work it loose.

I managed to get the pin out. Any tips to get the piece the pin holds in out?

A wooden dowel through the front of the slide and tap the nut backwards. Aim the dowel at the bottom end of the nut, as much as possible. Clean as much crap as you can out of the dovetail slot of the nut first.

Honestly.... H&S has it's place, and that's the workplace. For normal, everyday life, common sense, knowledge, advice etc. have all kept us alive perfectly well. Nothing of detriment is going to be in any solution from any of those chemicals, (caustic obviously needs age old basic precautions, but the solution would be weak anyhow), so there's truly no need to go down this route. Can we please just keep simple tasks simple for once?

If gasses are a problem, the vat is set up in the wrong spot. Even inside though, it would likely need to be gassing somewhat vigorously to create any notable problem. Caution is a good thing. Excessive caution isn't.

The stainless thing is a different topic altogether.

I've seen many pictures of 'vats' in very enclosed spaces - spaces where I wouldn't put one running washing soda (hydrogen doesn't take that long to build up from even a small pot).

We can't protect numpties from themselves.

Bicarb would be my second choice - but I'd bake it for a while to turn it into washing soda anyway

No need. It functions fine as is.

Caustic? Too difficult to dispose of imo. With washing soda you can just sling it on the grass. I suppose you could always use it to turn that annoying neighbour into soap though - or is that a lye?

Caustic is no harder to dispose of. In diluted form, it's as weak or strong as you make it. It's sold as drain cleaner, so that gives an idea of one disposal method. Lye/caustic are one and the same. I run caustic in my large vat, and have no worries or qualms with it. It all boils down to simple common sense.

IMHO, anyone who blindly follows any info they read or hear can't be helped much. Best just left to their own devices and hope they don't take anyone else with them.

That was not easy. The dowel just got mangled.

I threaded a bolt and a couple of washers through the nut to give me something to hit on and protect the nut.
