Welding wire to hold the bit to be de rusted is ok.

On the positive cathodes leave about 1" (25mm) (2.5cm) approx. above the water and connect the wire there.
Have as many as them as you can, the greater the surface area the better.
Consider putting in some mesh at the bottom of the tank.

If you want to be fancy add a magnet at the bottom as well and a water mixer.

Never go wrong with more sacrificial metal. The bits the + side Positive side connect to.

Don't have any more scrap apart from some thin box in very small pieces will run it as is and see how it goes.

1 table spoon per gallon to start with, less means the reaction is slower, more speeds it up to a point. Then adding more is a waste.

As soon as you power up you will se bubbles, then crack a beer, wine or a drink of choice and wait.

And i've read its best not to use copper wire to suspend them?

Copper wire is no problem on the negative side. I use copper wire for my connections, and for suspending pieces. It would corrode like there was no tomorrow if you dunked copper in the solution on the positive side though.

Leave it, it does no harm.
This is the time you do not want to but a naked flame near it.

You can if you want, but it is extra work.

You can just move it away to view your work.

Its been stewing for 48hours now. The tank gets sun on it in the afternoon its warmed it up nicely.

how much longer should i leave it stewing?

I think its done. I gave it a blast with the pressure washer and stuck it back in the soup as i don't have time to play tonight.

I pulled it out gave it a blast with the pressure washer and left it on the grass while i bathed the kids. I'm sure it started rusting again so its better in the tank until i can sort it.
