The thing I find strangely amusing is that although the area around the hole has a lot of hammer marks the anvil portion itself has very few.....

Single digit numbers 0-8 General Mechanics vices, unbreakable nut, no quick release, patent 196858, reg des 666598, an S after the digit were swivel versions (swivel patent 125707)
14-16 Fabricated steel unbreakable quick release vices (appear in 1960 catalogue) add a P for non QR (16 disappears 1971)
21-28 Fitters vices, cast iron, quick release. Also available with swivel apart from the 28.
30-33 Non QR pearlitic iron vices with greater jaw depth and further opening than normal. (appears in 1971/72) These look nothing like the 34-36 vices
34-36 Filers and fitters vice, quick release (non QR add a P), swivel also available. Jaw and slide sloped for better access. Unbreakable steel according to catalogue
46-49 Dockyard/foundry vice, cast iron and massive but look similar to the 34-36 vices. No 49 weighs 250lb
74-75 All steel garage combination vice with anvil.
80 clamp on table vice very similar to the garage vice but much smaller, cast iron with steel slide.
83-84 quick release heavy duty steel vice (post 1935)
110-114 Heavy duty vice with quick release, cast steel, non quick release same model no but with a P at the end
242-246 Machine vice for milling/drilling, heavy duty.
412-414 Machine vice with swivelling jaw.
506-508 1/2 American style heavy chipping vice, cast iron.
516-518 1/2 American style heavy chipping vice cast steel
631-634 American style combination vices, available with swivel
643-645 Machine vice for milling/drilling, heavy duty, grooved jaws to hold round stock vertical or horizontal.(post 1935)

After a certain date the steel vices were changed to pearlitic/malleable/sg/nodular iron

I'm bound to have missed some from the above (I've not included any of the woodworking ones or anything modern).

EDIT: Just remembered there are also the SQ series of vices that are similar to the standard mechanics vices but have a quick release that works by undoing them 1 turn.

74-75 All steel garage combination vice with anvil.

Finally figured out within the last few weeks what the main difference is between the 74 & 75, and it's pure and simple size. The 74 is a half pint compared to the 75.

The 74 also had two holes in the casting that you could poke valve stems into..... presumably so you could spin them to check they are straight. But it's mostly the size, a 75 is deceptively large

Wasn't one of the holes also something to do with an adaptor so that you could hold a cylinder head or similar with the vice, or was that just something held within the jaws?

I was surprised at the size difference when I finally saw a 74. I have parts of a 75 scattered around here, (it had a knackered leadscrew and nut, so currently I have the rear jaw in the shed to use as a miniature anvil on occasion), but I'd always thought it was some other minor difference between them. I'd never even considered it being overall size related 'til I saw one.

Fairly certain that's just held in the vice as it was available with the 75 as well which doesn't have the holes.

IIRC the valve holes are deleted from the later 74's that don't have the auto vice logo on them, I don't think I've ever seen the cylinder head adapter still with a vice sold second hand, seen a few sets of the fibre jaws .... most are missing the pipe jaws to

They don't have quite that same air about them as the older style, do they. Is the leadscrew thread on that one the proper type? Seems to be a standard thread form rather than square.

It does seem a finer thread than the other two record 74's on eBay at the moment, both of which are also the newer type. Having stared at those I'm convinced that if I ever buy a 74 it will be the old type

A lot of information and very interesting too, thought there must be several reasons for the variation and numbers associated with vices.With a great and variable industrial past I guess there is good reason for some much differing types.As has been said this discussion only really relates to engineering styles and not mentioned wood and others along the way.
The more I read the more I remember from my past in engineering at the start of my working life.
Lots that have disappeared and forgotten.

I was at a house earlier today buying yet another welder and I spotted a record no 74 auto vice on his bench. It looked in reasonable condition but the swivel base was missing. But the thing about it that caught my eye was the fact that the jaws were wider on one side! One side looked like a standard vice but the other side stuck out maybe 1" further like an offset vice. Is this normal as I've never noticed it in any photos of that model?

As I was admiring the vice and praising it's desirability he asked if I wanted to buy it. (He had a record no 5 sitting at the back of the bench to replace it).
I had been up since 5am, marshalled all day at a motor sprint so my mind wasn't thinking straight. I was struck dumb, eventually saying I wasn't sure what it was worth, how much was he asking. He wasn't sure either so he agreed to give me first refusal on it while we both did our research on prices.

I'll be back down past him at the end of the month, what is a sensible price for one? It's the earlier model with 'Auto Vice' cast into it.

And before someone asks, the welder was a nice little Pickhill 'Junior' oil cooled.

I'm really not sure what value I'd put on one without the swivel base tbh. The jaws are indeed offset as you describe, allows you to some extent to hold long pieces vertically.

From memory they are for holding car valves while you clean them up?
I sure I have seen a photo of this before, I see you have asked on Garage Journal as that would be my next port of call
