The 74 also had two holes in the casting that you could poke valve stems into..... presumably so you could spin them to check they are straight. But it's mostly the size, a 75 is deceptively large

Hi All,
I was wondering if any of you Record experts here could help me?
You see, I have this steel No.75, and I would really like to know its age. In the bottom it says "z" and "35", but thats about it. I will tryk to af some pictures.
I have searched quite a bit on www with no luck.
I will be very greatfull for any input you can come up with.

If it has the ball shape rather than a parallel end on the screw, pre '80's is about the closest you're likely to date it.

That Record 75 is an early one as far as I can tell. The writing on the side has changed over the years.

Latest production (1960's onwards) labelled as
Record
75
The very latest were painted blue but there are examples with this writing that are red.

1950's production labelled as
Record
No 75

Earlier production labelled as
Record
Steel
No 75

Earliest (1930's) production labelled as
Record
All
Steel
No 75

I don't know the exact cut over dates, the above dates are very approximate.

I can't find a picture of the wording style 'Record No 75' but here are examples of all the other wording variants and also the screw and paint changes. The first two aren't original paint.

The oldest wording.


Dropped the word 'ALL'


Now just 'Record 75', Still has ball end and coarse thread.


Changed to square end and fine thread but still red.


Now changed to blue paint

Mine is the excact same as the no. 2 red one from Garage Journal.
"Steel" labeled-originally red-bal shaped-trapez thread spindle-soft radius parts where jaws are mounted-square headed bolt for pipe jaw mount.
So yes, must be from 1935 - 1950
1935 cataloque shows also "All Steel".

The "35" and "Z" labeled in the bottom of mine, could be cavity no. from the mold its made from rather than the year?
