Whats the arrangment of the ignition coils on this engine? Just thinking at a tangent becuase 2 & 3 would be on the same coil if it was a double ended wasted spark system.

It's a "coil pack" (which is a new term to me anyway), not used to these new fangled things without a distributor where I can forget the rotor arm and spend many happy hours trying to work out why it isn't starting........

Another trick to keeping valves in place is to fill the cylinder with string. Keep the free end of course! Rotate the crank so that cylinder is at TDC and work away. Handy trick if you have no compressor and it doesn't leak away through burnt valves either.

The "Indian Rope Trick" is suggested for use on my Stag (yes I know I don't learn) as there is invariably huge problems getting the aluminium heads off the block and you put the rope in the cylinder, through the spark plug hole and then turn the engine over in an attempt to release the head without damaging cylinder/piston.

Of course I have another problem now. The cam belt cover is under the LH engine mount. The engine mount is fitted to the head (the head that side is now on a trolley jack). I need to move the car out of the carport......
I see a lump of angle across the inner wings and a strop around the top of the engine to support it temporarily. Must make sure it never gets in gear as it apparently has wet liners as well! (Another temporary clamp).

Is there a piece missing out of no. 2 exhaust? roughly where the two valves come together
if it is that is caused by the engine burning oil it cuts through the valve like a thermal lance
I have blown it up to size of my 30 monitor and cant decide, in that cyl also is that a crack running from the head down through the plug thread

Number one looks too black IMO looks like it is burning a little oil.

No 2 exhaust valve is intact (nothing missing) and no crack (there was a bit of clumber hair (gets everwhere!) on the spark plug thread.

I would like to have seen the fresh plugs, they are your eyes into an engine.
also number 2 looks a little 'washed' are you sure it was not using water .

PS I have used the rope trick on two strokes to undo flywheel nuts and on auto cars to undo front crank bolts.

I've not had the car long enough to find out - I still haven't got it running properly!
The plugs (except #2) were actually a reasonable colour. Could #2 be washed by the petrol as it wasn't combusting properly - when it was running there was a very strong smell of petrol coming out the exhaust.

Dropped it off at the engine re-conditioners. He could achieve no vacuum on #2 and also commented that it was using oil. I'll get it back next week and when it's back on the car we'll see if it has solved the problem!

Head now back, 6 valves redone and now re-installed in the car. It started, great plumes of smoke and it looks like I now have a crack in the exhaust manifold and more worryingly there is a loyt of oil coming out of there.
The dipstick is showing an overfull sump and it's also quite an emulsion (I hope that is caused when I took the head off?)
So , not sure where to go next. More money to get the manifold sorted, or with the amount of oil in the exhaust, accept it's a knackered engine, cut my losses (which are quite significant) and just give up!?

not saying you don't know but I have to ask, did you use the correct head pattern for tightening the head down.
if it didn't smoke before it would suggest you have made a mistake somewhere

i thought about that but as he never posted about smoke only rough running I didn't bother, could have been damage when the work was done.

All, thanks. In order. Yes I followed the precise order and tightening sequence which was to tighten, release, tighten to 20Nm then angle tighten (I have the right bit of kit!) to 110 +/-6deg in a predefined sequence.
Head was tested and valves that didn't pass were lapped etc., until they did
Smoking is a cracked exhaust manifold and the person who did the head commented on the fact it was burning oil.
