Well there goes the holidays, I had so much planned and have done almost non of it. I offered to change inner and outer sills on a classic mini and mostly ended up removing the whole floor, a-panels, wheel arches, bottom of bins and lots of little bits. I really hate the way you think you removed enough under seal to find that the car is back on fire, oh well it will be finished in a short time and I can get on with welding in the cage
Glad to say that the cage has been ordered so now I can get back on with this project. Also here is a quick capture of the FEA which I performed on the cage design.
roll cage stress
roll cage stress under 225 times scale
roll cage displacement of 7.45mm with a mass of 70Kg instantly stopping from 60mph to 0mph (just to keep the web version simple and to produce pictures)
Been thinking about this a while and I had planned on water jetting the front screen then using ECE R43 marked plexi glass on the sides and rear which would be fine.
Does anyone know of a 5 axis water jet in the UK? I have found them in the USA but not here yet.
This whole thing with the sides being toughened I know it can't be cut which is why I planned plexi, but what I want to know is if the glass is hot and then quenched to toughen can something be done to un-toughen the glass, it seams to be a question not asked. Also a long time ago I found someone who managed to cut the toughened glass back 1" by sanding it!! I spent some time working for a shower enclosure company so understand the glass and differences and was told by a glass company they could remove x amount of glass off a toughened unit but I didn't ask if it could be heated or something to remove the toughened state.
Any ideas, only that I would like glass side windows but without too much hassle, I suppose the ideal way would be to find the manufactures of the glass and ask them to cut it before they toughen... That would be a possibility
Because of the curved profile of the glass. I could try a 3 axis but 5 is the correct way to do it. If I can't find one there is a company in the midlands who will cut the glass for me anyway
I asked him today about laminated glass cutting and he said he could do it.
I said you needed 5 axis and he assumed that was because the cuts are not at 90 degrees to the vertical.
He told me there is a 5 axis machine in the UK, but set up time/cost would be very expensive.
I could find out where it is if you want?
Hold your horses at the moment I found this company http://www.thevehicleglasscompany.co.uk who can makes the side glass and can cut the front screen. I will see how it goes but thank you for the offer
From today, in went the rest of the cage and the seats just to ensure that there is enough room and also to get the harness points correct. Very happy with today and hope to finish polishing the frame. Hope to be placing the roof skin on soon and then everything from there on is easy
I added a B pillar attachment to both sides of the main hoop as another fixing point and then I started to polish the roll cage and the welds
Then made a subframe for my seats, I want them to slide so used some of the mini system and mocked up a frame which bolts on, I removed all the bits I didn't need then I relocated the lift handle from the side to the middle and changed the angle due to the frame on the runners, fitted the seat and its solid so I will get around to making the other side and will then finish weld them as it is only spotted at the moment
After seeing everyone's minis I wanted to make a real go at mine over the weekend, this included hours of grinding, welding and generally cursing in my normal manor.
The C pillars were ground back as far as I could go because I forgot to buy flap discs and didn't want to make a hash of it with a coarse disc so they can wait till next week to be smoothed down.
With that done I cut a section from a roof skin and offered it to the car, marked around it and then cut the sections to fit the filler piece, this was all held in place with mole grips and inter grips all of which I always thought I had plenty of until this job hence the strap in the rear. Looking forward to welding this in to place once I have spent a few hours fully aligning the roof skin
Until next time, unless I go out and spend time on the gearbox / engine
Nope. it will be very small W but I will re-shape it when the infill goes in. I am guessing there will be a fair amount of filler going on the roof to smooth it out.
Lucky that the mini glazing is quite simple and does have plastic beading around the glass and roof too. I am hoping that the W shape wont be too bad as it will be quite flat there ~ will find out in the next couple of weeks I guess then I call on body filler to be my friend
Get yourself a shrinker/stretcher machine and make a new front screen surround lip.
After that job is done you will find a thousand others to do with it.
the weekend was taken up with other stuff like, rich's drive shaft seal, mullens spoiler, kiefhs air bag light, fitting new Ethernet wires round the house (floor boards up)
My other half finished making my new shed windows so I got them installed and I am very pleased with them
Then with my windows in I opened up the gearbox, removed the old diff and replaced it with a quaife ATB unit and timkin bearings, still need to torque it down but I don't have the bar or loctite with me so that will have to wait.
