Except that you can prototype something and wander away to do more productive things whilst it is printing. The result will either be confirmation that it is good to go, or could then be reproduced mechanically if warranted.

Do those ears actually have a real purpose once fitted though?

not really TBH, The ones on the originals were all snapped off too.

A big thank you to @Onoff for printing and posting the washers to me, they came today and I just fitted them.
One tab broke off of each as I poped them into the locating holes. These work a treat my rack is as secure as it can be anyway.

And therein lies the problem with many of the 3D CAD jockeys who post models to Thingiverse.

Some parts of the model need to be a facsimile of the original. Other parts, like the locking tabs, need to be redesigned with a view to the (limitations of the) 3D printing process. That is where the design and engineering skill lies - like a surgeon, knowing which parts to cut out and which ones are better to remain.

I hear you mate looking at the actuall locating holes they could be wider without the hook on the end.
But these work well enough.
