Hi everyone.
Please is there any hack on how best to clean rust off vehicle chassis outside grinder and wire brush? Am working on a Toyota Hilux and can't seem to get through the rust. Am relatively new in this field so practicing on any thing possible to improve and learn more.
90% of my jobs are rusty vehicles, so I need every knowledge that could make life easier and save me dying quicker than my expiry date!

theres many ways. cost and where you are and what you can do on the site varies

descaler
wire brush in a drill/grinder
flapping disks on a drill/grinder
sandblasting
using a laser
chemical route, phosphoric acid.

That may be because there's nothing there except rust. There's no steel left, it is all iron oxide. A hammer, a chisel, or a needle gun will confirm if this is true. In the absence of a needle gun, I've had good results carving thick rust off heavy steel with a Bosch PSE180E electric scraper with a TCT blade.

I was wondering if anyone has tried and had good results, with an SDS+ fitting needle scaler on an electric drill/breaker? It's a Makita with a breaker setting. ( bought from Sardine). The job is de scaling a few sq metres of rusty steel deck. I don't know if this is a good idea or even...

Thats not rust ,,, in the Land Rover world that would just be called '' patina''. {some call it '' character'' I think its all the same thing , but it depends if your buying or selling.}

yea buy a new one blast the old one and all that that would be left is a pile of rust and grit on the floor

Just spray on thick underseal like the dealers do. Don't want to muck about with all of the grinding and welding malarky.

sometimes those things are not actually as bad as they first look , they seem to get a coat of surface rust , and then it stops ,,, mind you all the bolt heads rust off .

then again some days they actually are that bad ,,, id be tempted to take it to a blasters ,,, after giving it a tap to see if its actually worth taking to get blasted.

Trelawney VL303 Needle gun, I wouldn’t bother with any other brand. I do a lot of work on Hilux and L200’s and the VL303 is my go to tool. Two minutes with it will tell you exactly what condition the chassis is actually in under the rust.

Grit blasting would be good if you want to pay someone.
In terms of DIY, an angle grinder and wire brush is very, very effective.... but can be dangerous.
A small needle scaler can be useful, especially in places where the grinder cannot access, but scalers can be a bit brutal.
A wire brush on a drill is not very good - needs more speed.

Trelawney VL303 Needle gun, I wouldn’t bother with any other brand. I do a lot of work on Hilux and L200’s and the VL303 is my go to tool. Two minutes with it will tell you exactly what condition the chassis is actually in under the rust.

All of this ^^^^ Anything else, just wasting your time.

Though id agree that looks rough. Prob cheaper to get a new chassis unless you work for £5 an hour.
