Safe way to cut asbestos

Asbestos asbestolux and any of its close cousins should be treated as dangerous. Asbestos didn't get the nickname of the Silent killer for no reason, it can take a very small amount of fibre or dust to get on your lungs and kill you over time some times up to 25 years.
Solid sheets are best left whole BUT over several years of asbestos being left alone some of its surface fibres CAN become airborne and should be treated with extreme care. If you value your life the last thing you will put on your face is a paper mask they don't offer adequate protection. I will not transport asbestos under haz chem regs if I don't have the right equipment

Remove the full roof sheet local to the proposed opening and replace with a suitable alternative.
You would even be able to do necessary hole cutting on the ground so much safer all round.

iff you want to work it to the letter removing a sheet can cause as much dust as cutting a "wet" hole...i have my own opinions on these roofing sheets and the risks involved in working with it.

Funnily enough I am on an asbestos awareness course next week organised by the NHS for contractors working on their sites.
Not that I need warning of the dangers as I nursed my Dad till he died from Mesathelioma, the result of asbestos exposure when fireproofing doors built for the local technical college in the sixties.
In two years he went from a fit and active man to a frail shell of his former self and basically drowned in his own lungs.

iff you want to work it to the letter removing a sheet can cause as much dust as cutting a "wet" hole...i have my own opinions on these roofing sheets and the risks involved in working with it.

What's your opinion? With threads like this, any and all info is handy.

On a tangent, what's the simplest, (read that as cheapest. I'm a Yorkshireman, remember ), reliable way of sealing a pipe going through a corrugated roof? Appearance unimportant. I keep intending to make a spot in the shed for a burner, and I'll have to take it through a metal corrugated sheet if I do.

Is lead okay for flashing around a flue about 5' above a stove? If so, I have enough old sheet knocking about to sort that easily. Wasn't sure what the approx. temps would be that high up though, hence my uncertainty over using the classic option.

Are you sure it's actually asbestos?

I don't know Pete, I believe it was built in the 1960s. I imagine they were still using asbestos on roofs then.

Cut hole 1/8" bigger than pipe and fill with heat proof aluminium mastic was my idea MattF

Thank you very much everyone. I did know that asbestos dust was lethal and that is why I asked. Appears there is no safe way of cutting it, so if I go ahead with my plan it will be bends and through the wall. Cheers buddys.

Where's your sense of adventure man? Honestly; A member on here doing things the easy way? Half the fun of doing something is in the experimenting. Easy enough to add an insulating layer/sleeve later on, if needs be.

And if you accidentally cut hole too big like I did hmm, on a nissen shed, a bit of fibreglass loft insulation and the alumin mastic mix.

heres mine matt 5" single wall flue pipe but used a slip collar and some folded metal spacers the rest i just siliconed it and was solid until i reroofed the shed roof recently and now i need a bigger space due to the felt i have used so using a dual slip method



forgot to say homemade anti downdraft cowl made from 1.5mm corvec britony flue

ive run mine at high heat with rocket burner id say about 20 times and theres no loss of paint on them

the grey outer slip cover is just a weather cover this was pop riveted in certain places but is fully home made

the stainless steel flue pipe is just slotted into it and is about 5" the top outer cover is 6" or just slightly bigger
