Safe way to cut asbestos

The chilling thing though is the big corporations knew the dangers of their products and still allowed it to be used in all types of products. Look in the videos below and there is even a pathe news piece on the benefits of using asbestos cloth for curtains and upholstery in the home.

Mash up the bit of the asbestos you cut out of the roof and use it to fill the gap?

no offense guys but most of this thread is about dire warnings with asbestos there seems to be little content on how to do the chimney other than being lectured about it or any knowledge of the expense in the removal of it from your property funny though i dont see the council or the governent paying for the removal from peoples homes/propertys to say they got the revenue from the sales from these items to the public

possible removal of the stuff will set you back somewhere in the region of 500.00 + its not cheap simple as

other alternatives if your lucky and have an apex roof then you can take a side panel off without touching the roof

otherwise its core drill the concrete panel if these are what you have but the older types still have the steel core inside of them

You know, sitting in a chair over the weekend thinking about a job is completly different from doing it. If I had just went to the garage and had a look, I would have noticed that there is wood above the concrete sections the whole way round the roof apart from the lower end. I can easily take some wood out and replace with plate with the pipe through.

There's no risk if the asbestos is encapsulated in artex/fibre board/insulation etc that's in good condition, the hazard only occurs when there is dust that can be stirred up and breathed; that's why older buildings often have asbestos registers filled with this, that and the other. the buildings are safe as is provided the asbestos containing areas are surveyed regularly and if renovation/remodelling is being done the asbestos can be removed from that area before hand. Blanket removal of asbestos from all their buildings would bankrupt most councils and there's no good reason to do it.

On the other hand cutting asbestos materials is an excellent way of creating dust, the equipment to deal with that dust is expensive and you need to know what you're doing.

I used to work in a 10 storey (government) building that asbestos was found in the fire escapes. A specialist firm had to be bought in to remove it and they were dressed like space men ! It was then carefully stacked by the side of the lower floor and left there until the governments own building maintenance people (long since "contracted out") came to bag it up for disposable. This was a scorching hot day so we had all the office windows wide open and the workers stripped down to just shorts and boots - before smashing all the asbestos sheets up with sledge hammers That's me b***ered then !

When I was around 8 years old my dad put an extension on the house, (new bathroom and kitchen). Some of the hardcore that went under the concrete floor was left over WWII big six asbestos sheets which we (me helping) smashed up with hammers, no protection what so ever.
