and if you experienced eye digging at hospital , you should know what I'm talking about .
Depends what you're doing...
Glases for general wear, goggles/face shield for anything that produces high velocity particles. (Grinder etc)
Uvex ultrasonic goggles are my go to.
The other option is a trend Airshield pro, face, ears and respirator in one. Expensive though.
That is a good idea for welding. Hot bits in your ear can cause serious damage as well.I've had both my eyes dug/ scraped now, first time in hospital second time by optometrist and was painful at the time.
First time was over 10 yrs ago and was fibreglass, fairly central I think though it doesn't seem to affect vision anymore.
Second time I was wear safety specs but a bit of what must have been rust (was needle scaling) fell in my eye round the edge of the goggles and embedded off centre in my other eye. Actually went cycling and only looked in the evening as it didn't feel quite right, to my horror there was a easily visible brown blob on my eye, towards the edge of the iris on the cornea. I picked it out with my finger nail but later went to see my optometrist who carefully removed the rust ring. Very little pain at any point. There is a scar but its off centre so I can't see it.
I now wear a full face 3m6800 for basically everything like needle scaling, grinding, whatever. I lean over and dust off my head before taking it off too as those bits of crud which just fall in can easily embed as I have found out.
I like @fizzy idea of swimming goggles while welding.
Also, wear some small ear defenders while welding as that stuff in your ear can cause permanent damage too to your inner ear.
OMG!if the forum allows this
always wear better than what you may think is best we all do it
warning this is graphic within reason, but it really does show even eye protection isnt enough
to be honest im not so sure if it was a silly 4.5 grinder or a big one i suspect it was a big oneOMG!
I wonder what size grinder it was?
I often wear my welding helmet or full face respirator when using an angle grinder. Notice I said "often". I always wear safety glasses of course.
But in future I will ALWAYS wear full face protection.
Thanks for posting Gaz!
And a reminder to everyone.
My mate who recycles pallets nearly lost an eye.
Was it a bandsaw or a reciprocating saw? Was it a nail gun? Nope none of the dodgy tools he uses every day. He always wears eye protection for that.
His accident happened at home pulling out a nail with a claw hammer
Even I would never have thought of eye protection for that!
