Personally, I always think that's the most bland industrial colour to use on machinery. Closely followed by yellow and that mid blue which seems quite common. Whatever happened to Brunswick Green and the like?

Tell your wife she has good taste in colour. I personally find Mid Brunswick to be a nice choice. Not too dark as to be oppressive, but not too light as to look sickly. I've got a freshly brush painted piece of cast in the shed, if you want me to take a photo so that you can get a rough idea of how it looks in real life. Those colour charts never do colours justice, IMHO.

Maroon, (I think the one I've gone with is classed as wine red), is another old style colour which I personally think looks nice too. Quite a rich Victorian style colour, but again, just has that touch of old fashioned class about it.

It's sad, I know, when you're treating tools like internal decor, but I've 'gotten so sick of stripping mankily applied modern industrial colours from stuff that I could gladly never see flat grey/mid blue/yellow, or those sickly light green'ish or blue'ish hammered finish type paints, ever again.

You'll have to excuse my photography skills. To say they're somewhat lacking would be an understatement.

The first photo seems to give the best indication of the colour. The above is a perfect example of the shonkily painted industrial stuff I mentioned. Took me yonks to get it from how it was when I got it:

Worst part is, I've still the rest of it to strip, clean, de-rust and repaint yet.

Spent a little time on the wheel last night tig welding but had to go home early so still a bit to crack on with tonight. I think I will leave the welds showing, they're okay and when powdercoated should look nice hopefully. Still about 2/3s left to tig and then it's onto the stand.

Used to make a fair few similar frames and things all folded from lasered profiles. Nice way of doing it, the mortice and tennons make assembly pretty simple....
Looks like it went together easily

Couple of things you may like to consider for next time, from a fabrication point of view... when you put the inside and outer sections in place, have you thought about making it more like an outside corner joint, overlap them slightly to stop any major burn through. Gives a ready to weld edge joint, no preps required.... and once its welded a quick lick with a flap disc, and you have a nicely radiused corner on the frame all round, with minimal grinding.

Other one, when the tennons are drawn, knock the height of them down a bit, so if its 6mm plate, cut them about 3mm long, allows for a nice hot plug weld, and minimal weld profile to clean off afterwards.

It does take a bit of thought to get the notches right if you aren't working everything on full sheet thickness.

Did think about doing that way but thought it would be harder to control distortion. The way I did it all the sides were really well fitted so harder for the frame to pull out of shape once assembled and ready for welding, will have a think about your suggestion thanks.

I prepped the lugs so they were welded in as plug welds but agree it would have been less effort if they were already 3mm. We weren't sure how accurate the laser cutting would be and is why we left them at 6mm and filed them square for fitting it all together.

I was determined to finish tigging the frame last night, finally got it done but it was a late finish and a long day as I started work (no holiday here in Scotland) at 7.30am.

Will start the stand later today and once that's done will start aligning the adjuster and bottom anvil for final welding of those areas.

Probably go into work tomorrow so only one day of play this weekend.

Quite a late start today but progress on the stand. Darren's drawing w super accurate so I made everything as spot on as I could, probably a bit OTT but I like the fitting part of metal working.

Not looking forward to lifting the frame off the bench, might have to see if anybody is about to give me a hand.

Finished the stand, still have the feet to weld on, I was going to weld them on when the wheel was in place but realised it will be painted then so still need to weld the feet on. I got the frame off the bench but don't think I'll be lifting it back up on the bench by myself anytime soon.

Had a wee look at the adjuster and anvil alignment and initial thoughts are all looks good. Hopefully have a play tomorrow night but had a mate call me today and his wife and family are over from oz and are coming to stay for a week on Wednesday so won't get to work on the machine then but will have to go snowboarding and sightseeing instead.

Even second in command was having a look at my work this afternoon. ;-)
