the trouble is with modern motors there on there limit . they may develope 3hp but an older larger motor has a better starting capacityI would expect there to be more load when cold but not so much as to prevent the appropriate size motor from starting. My experience seems to be in conflict to that of many others though. Ran my 3.5 HP belt drive yesterday after standing idle for a few days and it started with no noticable difference to that in summer ! It was about 3 degrees in the place it's kept. Going to try my little 1.5 HP direct on Monday, that hasn't been used for a while.
