I find it lovely that these companies had the option of customisation of standard products to suit the customer. I've been going through the 1972 optional extras price list of my lathe, there's an option for the colour of your choice to match your other equipment if so desired, options for a gap bed, a light and so on. It's strange that there are so few of those vice stands around yet you're finding factory modifications within them. A different time.

Won the bid on another vice I don't necessarily need. 
Its a 4" jaw Columbian machinist's vise, made in Cleveland Ohio. These were very well made, and I was surprised to find one in this condition here in the UK. I think I'm going to break from my tradition of painting "all" of my vise's / vice's green, and keep this one as it is.

Well I started the work on the vice.
It was seized solid, The handles slid up and down and that was it.
Oh well Heath Robinson de-rusting tank. That was last Wednesday. Old PSU from a computer was brought in to play.
Yes it is covered, just looks like it is not.
Today I pulled it out.
That is it, straight out of the tank, it was free to open and close. The only proplmem was the rear spring. It has rusted away. I have a suitable spare. Now were did I put it when I tidiyd up.
It bits, still wet from the tank, now it will get a dam good pressure washing down to remove the old grease and the remaining crud.
@slim_boy_fat can you see something what was yours.
On the bench, dried off, first coat of bees wax, black boot polish rubbed in. A few more to go.

This has been cleaned and i used Vactan to treat the rust just need to find a place for it.

I opted for hammerite smooth blue. It's horrible to paint with but it's worked okay. Here's a photo a while ago with a faded No2 in its jaws.

I actually had a dream about a vice last night! I was in America and found a junk shop type place that had lots of junk exept for a nice old Record vice and some mill table clamps. I debated weather to buy them and decided not to. Then there was some kind of flood in the city!? so I went back and made an offer that was refused (£12) and left it as the extra luggage costs on the flight home would have been too much.

Trying to look smart knowing the BS code are ya?
The only reason their paint is so much is because comparative to the other ranges they stock (lathes, tractors, stationary engines) the price is minimal when factored into the cost of restoration. A small-medium lathe takes under a litre to paint. I've never used Paragon but I've heard good things about them, and they offer a good range of colours that are otherwise difficult to obtain.
