I’ve been asked to restore four vices, a record 6, 3, 1 and 0. It’s actually dead therapeutic working on so many at a time, especially so as the mechanisms are identical, just smaller (or larger, depending on which way you look).

The sliding jaws are up first. All will be restored to my usual spec - pretty, but also ready to work. I love restoring vices!

I picked up this Record 24 a couple of weeks ago as my first vice. I wanted a big heavy one as I don't have a proper bench setup, so needed something with enough mass to hold work without being bolted down.

I've stripped and re-oiled everything, putting my new manual impact driver to use to remove the old fasteners and replace them with BSW stainless.

I originally planned to repaint it too, but I might just give the handles a cleaning up and call it good as it's in better condition than expected (don't want to become too precious of it too).


A couple of questions too:

I've been looking at the Record swivel bases for when I eventually get a proper setup. The mounting holes for mine are ~6.5" apart and it looks to have a similar base to the T84-34 and 23ZR. Does anyone know whether the swivel base for those new vices (T843423SB) will work for my old 24?

And finally although the jaws on this are okay, I wouldn't mind the option of replacing them down the line. They're 5 1/4" long and I can't seem to find any of this size - does anyone know of retailers selling these?

I thought record used BSF for their vices. I may be wrong, but the 34P I had definitely wasn’t BSW

Based on the machine screws that came out of the vice, they're BSW or UNC (as have same thread pitches). Some research shows the thread profiles are slightly different, but for the non-critical application of holding some jaws in place the BSWs are working fine!

Is kind of critical though... because jaws that rattle off are a pain.

The No6 I’m doing atm is an odd one, someone has poorly riveted the front jaw on

Very fair point, I'd meant in the sense of tension in the bolt, but a bit of threadlocker should solve the rattling if it happens too.

Well it's here, cost £25 and appears to be in good nick. Just given it a dose of anti seize all ready for the morning. Hopefully more pictures and information to follow.

Now in pieces after a clean. most of the dirt was old grease. It has some original paint and once tidied up I see no reason why it shouldn't out last me. I don't intend painting it or subjecting it to a rotary wire brush, wire wool, oil and elbow grease only.

It’s an early one for sure. Steel is pre-war, Record used to paint their steel cast products red and the iron products blue.

Rob, its old because it says steel? Can't be because it's made from steel surely? Git it all back together, clean, oiled and greased. Getting the spring in was a pain. Looked at a Youtube restoration and he did it with an adjustable spanner - not even close. Had to compress the spring in a vice, tie it up with string and then when it was in burn the string off. I'm sure there must be a better way - but it worked. Now all I need to do is decide which vice it will replace.

Not sure where you’ve pulled the name Rob from

Cast steel was used to make unbreakable vices. During WWII ductile iron (sg iron) was discovered which gave iron comparable properties to that of cast steel. The patterns were retained but the word ‘steel’ disappeared on the vices. The 34, 35 and 36 vices were also cast steel originally but changed after the war.
