This is the hand fabricated vice I bought in the Philippines, no castings, all parts are hand cut by gas and stick welded together.
It works very well but had a course threaded screw so doesn’t clamp particularly tight.
I paid the equivalent of £11 for it about ten years ago, brand new. A good indication of income in that part of the world.

I was watching one that was listed several weeks ago for £100.oo starting bid. Nobody bid, ebay stated it was relisted, but it wasn't.

a good honest working vice mine is virtually identical and the same colour ,had it 50 years and even though its had a lot of use its not worn out and the jaws are still parallel . I have a brand new record vice same size but no point in using it just because its new

The paint on your father's vice looks fine to me. I have tools that were modified and painted by my Dad. I'd never change anything about them, because they bring back good memories of him.

I'd agree. I've just lost my dad and I picked through his tools prior to donating them to a tool charity. I took a couple of Stanley planes and two wooden spirit levels which had belonged to both my grandfathers. All I did was set up and sharpen the planes and whip over with an oily rag. When I use them its like shaking hands with them again.

I have a few of my dads tools and it's nice to use them sometimes. I've had a couple of his old chisels I've been using lately and have a beer in the workshop while I sharpen them up.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Been 34 years since my Dad's passing, and I often use some of his tools instead of my own when I'm working on something special; yeah, its like shaking hands again.

Though off topic can I say how satisfying it was to clean, sharpen and set up those old planes. Paul Sellers web site is a mine of good information and if an old spanner monkey like me can get them up and running, anyone can.

I’ve just found a Record No.4 in the workshop, completely forgotten I had it and no idea where it came from, thought I’ve had it for years. Anyway one of the jaws is missing and one of the screws snapped off flush - any idea of what the thread is, and any tips for removal? I’ve run a drill though it and it’s as soft as cheese.

Not tried an easiout - need to find somewhere to buy them - will try my steel supplier when I’m over there next.

I would try a left handed drill first, less likely to snap and make it worse. Irwin do a 5 piece set of cobalt left handed drills, costs about 25 quid but has got me out of a hole quite a few times.

The vice from the other day.
It needed some TLC.


So it got it.

Striped down.
The screws are M6 holding the jaws on.
They were not in good shape when they came out.
Not forced out, they did unscrew. But they have had it.



So, Ford Fiesta Disc brake screws fitted a treat.




T Cut the blue paint work and a good polish with wax and oil.
