Interesting - do you think the (aluminium or zinc alloy) woodworker is a commercially made vice or apprentice/workshop made?
I presume the other would be a kind of pipe vice - or?

To be frank (My alto ego) I have not had a decent look yet.
Due to neighbour appearing with Beer and leaving with a wobble and tools.
When I get home I will have a decent look.

The Alloy Woodworkers does not lean itself to me to be apprentice/workshop made.
It is too good and is nicely even all round.
If I was to place money(Or half a role of toilet paper) on it. I would guess.
That it was commercially made in the late 1940's early 1950's.
As then we had a glut of alloy, think war planes. But a shortage off steel.
That's why Land Rovers had a alloy body. Plenty of it, simple curves and the factory was geared up to work alloy sheets.
The amount of steel is minimum on it and looks to be a mass produced thread. The Bars look to be a stock item.
Did it go into production. I would not like to say. No marks on it.
No names, casting numbers.
It may of been a short run. But I can not tell.
The other looks to be a "special to type" pipe vice.
It has a small tamper on the jaws, I may lean to a bearing vice.
Now I want a bearing vice a bigger bearing vice.
But I plan to use it as a Fire extinguisher vice.

Not a fun restoration.
The old finish was a pain to remove, it did not strip down easy and the new paint did not take very well.

Didn't take long to get it into service.
Does anyone perchance have a bench vice whose mounting holes are 4"/~100mm apart? It would be a fairly small one. Record No.2 I think is 4.5" center to center on the side mounting holes. I'm not bothered about the location of the third hole if there is one (that's what she said). Oddly specific, I know, but I want to mount one on an old wheel hub with 4x100mm PCD for light work/easy positioning, and I don't fancy drilling new holes. If nothing I'll just make adapter plates for a couple of smaller vices what for holding different stock.
