It’s a samsonia perfect model J number 35

This Parkinson Vise catalogue used to be available on the vintage mechanic site, but I can't find it on line anymore, glad I downloaded a copy.

Not heard of a 35?

When I tighten up the jaws to lock something in place it’ll only tighten so far and I suppose it jumps back! I’ll see if I can attach a video

The QR spring needs to be ratcheted up a tooth or two, unless the whole thing has badly worn through years of abuse and wrong adjustment.

Agree, seadog, assuming it's already been cleaned of any dirt, hard grease, filings etc especially in the areas where the half-nut and lifter operate, and re-lubricate with just a little oil.

I wish I'd known that forty years ago. I threw away a large Record that exhibited the same symptom

As well as the above, it does not look like that front bracket is mated properly, check if the screws are loose, but a proper strip, clean and lube would be best. Not yours but basic pic of the order.

I think the 74 was steel too though a bit smaller than the 75
I’ll finish the No 3 resto, that’s not great as it has a chunk broken off under the jaw on the fixed jaw side, but it’s just a nice size vice for everyday use.
I’ve just picked up a really nice 83 too so that will be my first QR vice and will probably become my default one once restored.
Also have an old wood working record (which was also red) that is stripped and ready for refurb. Oh and an Irwin Record 5ton which I’ve agreed to have, which will get tidied up and sold on I think

Just been and collected this today - was a local gumtree find. Bigger than it looked the pictures!! The picture below is it fully open at about 100mm, which doesn’t seem much for something that’s 600mm overall length, or am I just being greedy?

It will open further.

The moving jaw should stop when it is level with the back end of the fixed jaw.

Jut had to use a 10ton body ram to take my latest one to bits.

Look by the side mounting holes for the old GPO marks and a number. Yours is red, it may be an old GPO one.
