I started a reading marathon last night realizing there are 207 pages here. :doh:

After about half a dozen I decided to just fast forward through the pictures and comment or so for each; up to page 26 so far, but more enjoyable than watching television.

Wabbit - I know this gets into anorak territory here (so what's new?), but which of the older ones says Parkinson's (earlier) and which Parkinsons' (ie when the business became 'and sons')? And do any say vice rather than vise? I have an early Parkinson's that seems to say vice - haven't fully cleaned it yet, so may be a casting flaw.

Definitely weird - asking about the apostrophe on a 50kg bench vice.

It doesn't work that way. It's like the heroin addict saying just one more fix, then I'll stop, get clean and get a job. There will always be one more that you have to have, and you can't get rid of he others it would be like deciding which of your children to give away.

The thing with collecting is, in the beginning you don't seem to know its happening, it kind of creeps up on you. I've been there and done that several times over the years, and after awhile it can come to a point where the enjoyment fades, and thoughts of downsizing to streamline your life and enjoy other interests are entertained. But "not" today !

Yeah, what i started doing was reading a few pages at a time & then writing down where i was up to so i could start again & not miss anything including the pics.
Erm that probably hasn't helped has it.. :whistle:

That's so very true,I didn't need the Handy, or indeed the big Record 94 1/2 pipe vice I bought (why the hell I bought that pipe vice I dunno). I know i'm kidding myself that there won't be others but that's currently the tale i'm telling the other half to justify this one big one..so it's what i'll go with believing for now :vsad:

I've been perusing old photo's of vices on here & elsewhere whilst the weather is kack.
I keep looking at the finishing & build quality of various makes (difficult when they're not new & you're just going off pictures).
Are Fortis/Ajax to the same level as say a Parkinson or Paramo or Record?
Is the finish of a steel vice likely to be less good than a cast iron one, or again does it just depend on maker??
I don't know & in my quest for may next vice this might be worth knowing

Gotta love a Workmate. Got mine from a carboot for £3 about 15 years ago and its been well used every since. During lock down I replaced springs and got new jaws for it so its better than new.

I love the No74 too, I have 3, though only one is in use if you keep reading you'll find pictures and I have its big brother, No 75 which is now the workshop vice. There are pictures of that in bits too.

A great versatile asset to have, and with a swivel top, makes for a fine target shooting bench also.

Looks like an old Workmate, could it be the 625? I hadn't realise how collectable they have become. Mine is/was a 625 made in Ireland, apparently now devalued because the jaws are now not original.

I'm not sure of the number, I bought it several years ago at a charity shop here in the UK. Unlike the one I brought from overseas, the one in the photo has aluminium cross braces.

I've got one the same, in blue with alloy struts; it was my dad's. In a fit of anger when the plastic spring things that held the bottom legs open embrittled and snapped, I drilled out the fixing and bolted them fixed open

I only stopped using it recently when it became obvious that welding on a laminated wood surface wasn't a good idea..
