back through this thread, some fascinating stuff on here for a vice obsessive !
I'm still currently deliberating over getting another, I've decided I need a big engineer/fitter type one. Can't decide over steel vs Iron (it won't get a lot of hammer), it's more the aesthetics i'm looking at really, current shortlist is Parkinson F, Fortis or Ajax, however it changes daily

For me, even with quite a lot of space in home workshop and shed, and especially allotment shed, there are limits.
If you have a serious need for the biggest vices, you may be beyond help, as arc, slim and yellow suggest, but there are hundreds of small (00, 0, 1, clamp-on, or 6in and 7in woodworking vices out there) which fit nicely on a long high shelf, this could hold off the worst symptoms - or, as a complete cure is considered impossible, you could cut down on hardware and trawl the internet, ebay etc and old catalogues for info and pictures.
I once started saving pix off ebay of British 6in woodworking vices -- there were so many different makes.

Oddly I've also started saving pictures of vices
i just want one big vice (honestly it'll just be one..) & then hopefully I can do as you sensibly suggest by just buying smaller less space consuming smaller ones.
Thing is I did this with vintage footpumps (when they were the current obsession & ended up with a lot..)
I also decided just to collect a few old Army jack knives & erm really don't go there....
Anyway I want one big vice. I do like Parkinsons as based on the Handy G3 they're so well built but I honestly reckon I fancy something by a different maker so Fortis or Ajax are currently the front runners... well today anyway..
Oh god another obsession..
