…………………...........Not so clever is the very exposed screw thread to easily catch muck but otherwise a smart design.

I don't see that as being an issue with the Model 74 Auto-Vice, as it has an adequate metal cover. Perhaps you were thinking of the similar Model 75 vice ?

There's a cover over the back end of the thread but I mean when you open the vice jaws, the thread is exposed beneath the jaws so stuff can drop onto it (hopefully these pics will help explain what i'm jabbering on about )

Parkinsons are cheaper than , say, a Record.
As many second hand shops don't know the name.

Well I've 3 74's and an ancient 75 and there is nothing wrong the the threads of any of them, including the screw on this much abused one.

Found this while looking for something else. My Record 53 wood vice on my newly yacht varnished bench made from an old school vaulting horse. It didn't look like that for very long, now bares the scars of a multitude of crimes against wood.

Bought it in bits as spares but it's been in regular use outside for 7/8 years on a variety of benches. You can see how the damaged casting is bolted to the slide, with no noticeable

loss of function.

Wow, after all that damage & after a repair it still keeps going - that's impressive.

Plus, my first vice was/is a Parkinson, & still sits on my bench, so naturally I'm still drawn to them.

For much the same reason I'd always have a Record.

He says all the vices have issues, wonder what's up with the No7? Looks in perfect condition.
