nice - sometimes sold as a carvers vice, a similar, if not the same, vice is still available in Europe, not too pricey.

How was yours in use when you were fixing guitars - did you not find it useful enough to keep ou for general use?

No, the jaws are too soft to be overly useful as a gp vice, and it has a large footprint on the bench. It's easy enough to fit and remove as it is only secured by one central bolt. It is solid when being used to level a fretboard or to re fret and the adjustment is delicate enough to clamp an acoustic guitar body firmly without damaging it. Buying it was cheap enough, but the P&P, and customs charge almost doubled the price. However, compared to what I was using, which was a Workmate adapted with two large foam jaws, it's a leap in technology.

different topic - that Leiden/Boley I mentioned last page (for sale at £999 several months ago) is a Boley and is now offered at £229 - makes me feel quite sorry for the seller - you can imagine the disappointment building

I wonder why he thought it worth so much originally? It's not in particularly great condition.

That was the original plan, but ended up just cleaning it up - mechanical etc.
I love the patina. Its got more then 2-3 layer of paint besides the original, reminding of a long live with many interesting projekts.

IF you evert strip it getting the spring back in is an absolute cow. The only way I could do it was to lash up the spring with string then burn off the string once assembled. They are lovely vices, easily my favourite, at the moment.

I'm off to the workshop to see what the number is on mine.

If you have access to one, a valve spring clamp works a treat.

I like the 75 myself, when I got my 74 I hadn't quite realised how big the 75 was in comparison.

decades ago, I got both a 74 and 75 for peanuts from carboots - decided the 75 was a bit big so gave it to bro-in-law in Scotland
regrets, I have a few,
the 74 is v useful, but the 75, aah

Had a look at mine, forgot that the number was on the bottom. Mine has the 'Z' and what looks like 'IR 75'.

Here's mine on the bench in cleaned up, unrestored condition.

Could be fun if you could flip it up side down, to see if it had something like the 35 om mine
Also wonder if the handles at stamped like mine?

I think mine is in the same time frame as yours. Next time I'm out side I'll have a look at it.

The above one (Herbert swivel vice) sold for £32 in 2015, there's one with missing jaw inserts on eBay now for £500

Yes, grey wabbit, interesting London vice, but not £500 without jaws - I have one in reasonable condition apart from being slathered in paint, cost about £40+? a couple of years ago. You can see that they're weld fabricated (solid welds, but not 'dressed') which seems to be a fair way to make these for hard duty (probably last better than Swindens if all else is as tough, and Swinden's , still made. are pricey).

Calling it "The Herbert" rings strangely in my ears -- having been called a 'right herbert' at school. Also considering the different Herbert's machine company in West Mids was selling cast steel vices (Ajax, made by Fortis).

And subtitled "Armoured".

Anyone know more about the company?

Or about Leader - I know this is the Record weld fabricated steel vice range, but I've got a feeling they might have an earlier history? I have a cast iron Leader brand vice - no Record markings.

PS no offence to any Bert out there -- fine monniker.
