Yeah, I bit my lip watching the auction run down at the last couple of minutes, but was surprised when the add was pulled. Glad I contacted the seller after thinking about it. Got to stop thinking.

good evening, after a dismantling and summary cleaning, it seems that the vice has not suffered too much in this life apart from the fall it made during its transport. To dismantle the jaws, luckily I had marked keys 5/16 BS on one side and 1/4 W on the other? all screws are easily loosened. One question, are the adjusting nuts usually made of brass? There was only a light veil of light gray paint on the vise. While cleaning the sliding jaw I found inscriptions on the top. I marked them on a paper to see them better, the markings in the shape of arrows resemble those used in the English armories signifying its acceptance in the "broad arrow" troop. is 1943 a serial number or a date ?.

Cependant, travailler sur les chiffres et les lettres de chaque côté est un code avec lequel Alan Turing aurait eu du mal. Si le numéro est moulé, il s'agit probablement d'un numéro de commande gouvernementale, s'il est gravé, il pourrait s'agir d'un achat local et le numéro peut être la base / le département / le magasin. Tout ce dont je me souviens, c'est qu'un «N» sous la flèche le désigne comme Royal Navy, un «I» au-dessus signifie indien et un «D» de chaque côté signifie qu'il vient d'Australie.

Pre NATO standard parts numbers WD or MOD numbers are not easy.Where's @The_Yellow_Ardvark when you need him?
If it has a date and Government arrow cast in, a government order. Later they are stamped in. The idea was to save as much metal as possible.
Later, to speed up production, a sticker was used.
Post WW2 and in NATO times, both castings, stampings and stickers are used.
Manufactures parts are a good way.
Now. to throw in more confusion.
Stuff ordered, say for the GPO, for example was sometime diverted into secret projects.
The Old mine conversions, near Bath are classic.
They all had government arrows and other marks. But you could find vices from the GPO in the Royal Engineers workshop.
Or the escalators are marked up Euston Station.
The original colour of the paint will give a good clue.
Now, this is another way to be led up the garden path.
RAF and RN bases loaned to other nations forces. USAF being a common example. You can find British items over stamped, stamped next to with Other nation markings. It was taken onto the asset register.
Now, the reverse happens.
You can find items from other nations, re stamped with WD identifying marks.
So in Cape town you can find British gear with SA marks etc.
Now don't rely on thread forms.
The French made jeeps after the war. The used metric threads, with imperial heads.

What were the old mine conversions near Bath? I assume in the many Bath-stone underground quarries? and I know MoD brass especially Navy had a big presence in Bath -- I assume stores or bunkers? Still there?
Or are you sworn aaaagggg etc

All over the UK there were underground bunkers.
Ones near Bath I know very well.
All to do with hidden factories, art stowage, planning rooms.

I know in Portsmouth there were huge WW2 shelters/bunkers in the city. Several were built into the hill to the north of the city. The military always denied their existence, but anyone living nearby know where they were due to noises in the night and fenced off areas of land. This video shows one, now decommissioned, beneath Fort Southwick, pronounced Suthick, D Day invasion as planed and over seen nearby.

The D Day maps are wooden and hang from the wall in Southwick House They were installed by two chippys from the dockyard. The lads duly put them up and made to leave when the powers that be realised that they now new when and where the D Day invasion would take place. The carpenters where kept under wraps until after the 6th June just in case they let something slip.

The Maps were made by a Toy company, it was their fitters who were detained, for 28 days.
Kept in RN DQ Portsmouth and used on the HMS Victory during the day.
Their Detection papers are still in Southwick house.
Dockyard rumours abound that they had been shown the last working Gallows as well.

The Operation Dynamo and Hospital tunnels at Dover Castle are well worth seeing as well.
Southwick House was taken requisitioned by the Navy and Admiral Ramsay liked it so much that the then owner was made an offer he couldn't refuse. Eisenhower stayed there and co-ordinated D-Day from there. There's also a framed and annotated letter from the meteorologist who gave them the go-ahead to launch the attack.

I stand corrected. DQ's must have been a very unpleasant place then. It was bad enough when I worked there in the late 70's. It was widely rumoured that the gallows was still in place up to the 80's.

The long handle hanging under the table looks to have a rectangular hole, my assumption is that it fits over the 'unexplained' peg/boss and is used to tilt the table back on to the 2 wheels for moving. That would explain the swept curve in the handle and why it's shown just hanging by the part you would hold.

great thanks wabbit ---- sounds bang on -- also explains why no handle with mine -- it's a loose item to be attached when needed
there's no hook or broken off casting at that point, but it's just behind of the rear bolt so easy to attach a hook
Nice picture, confirming the Parkinson id, with a somewhat later 'perfect' type F than on my stand,
the stand is identical apart from the missing handle
btw, I think the triangle of slots would allow fitting of almost any of the type F or Samsonia J vises but maybe not the Handys, certainly not the older or smallest ones, without some drilling/adapter
I am fond of mine the table is big enough to be useful and has a lip -- worth looking out for folks - I seem to remember I found mine on gumtree under blacksmiths gear
