I just use π in 1 oil, does it really matter what you use?

Use 3in1 if you got money to burn, it’s just an sae20.

I found 100ml for sale on Amazon from £3.70. That’s £37/L.

For that money you could buy Morris’ Golden Film sae20 but wait… you’d spend £27 but get 5L.

Up to you whether you’d like to pay £37/L with the convenience of it being in a bottle or £5.40/L and you use an oil can. Morris do make a 1L bottle but it’s £10, which again is just under double the price of buying in bulk. Something to think about.

Similar in design to those made by Meyer & Weichelt before WWII, which were then continued almost unchanged in the GDR. Solid vises.

Could you brush the logo free a bit so that it can be seen better, please?

It's very pleasing to see that the vises with movable rear jaws are slowly gaining a bit more attention here ....

So the logo should be clear now: the capital letters B and B with something in between that looks like a vertically positioned two-bladed propeller.

The 125 speaks against an English-speaking manufacturer.

Question: Is the jaw width about 125mm or 5"?


When searching in the German-speaking area, it does not help that "BB" is often used as an abbreviation for "Backenbreite" for "jaw width" in offers.

The design is powerful, solid and stable without any kind of embellishment or artistic expression - it radiates pure objectivity, strength and solidity - which makes me think of the Eastern Bloc, rather soon after WWII until maybe the 1960/70s.

But looking even more closely, I ask myself

what the two dots at 3 and 9 o'clock mean, they are not there by chance ....

One could also get the idea that the second B represents a different sign .... but which one?



If we're in the Eastern Bloc, it might also occur to one that the character that looks like our B in the Cyrillic alphabet is phonetically similar to our W.

And the air forces of the Soviet Union were called Военно-воздушные силы - transcribed roughly Wojenno-wosduschnye sily.

They certainly didn't make vices, but surely someone made some for them and possibly they got a destination mark .... but I think that's pretty far-fetched even in this case, because the most similar Soviet Air Force mark I could find looks like this:

Bison-Bial is an excellent idea.
The sites of many German heavy industry enterprises have been located on Polish territory since WWII.

One example is the legendary vice manufacturer Breitenfeld & Scholz with its Eikar brand.
They were based in Bunzlau, now Bolesławiec in south-western Poland.

Since these were tried-and-tested models and vices were needed for reconstruction and in general anyway, they continued to produce them.

Here is my Eikar 150mm/6", 43kg, 1920-1944

How people like this kind of vice

As with everything, vises with movable back jaw have advantages and disadvantages:
- In the better models, the spindle is fixed in the rear, a.k.a. the dynamic part, the tube nut is turned, so the spindle is always completely protected;
- the position for the worker to the vise does not change, no matter how big the workpiece is;
- the larger the workpiece, the more the centre of gravity is shifted to the workbench, not in front of it;
- the aisle in front of the workbenches always remains the same width;
- when clamping and unclamping the workpiece, you mostly have a piece of workbench to the side for support/storage.


Some people see the disadvantage that a very long workpiece that reaches to the floor, for example, is limited in size because of the edge of the workbench, but they tend to overlook the fact that the vice is not fully mounted on the table, but extends a good distance forwards, but always the same distance.

Most people here nor there give a thought about that - I was one of them just some years ago.
I have both, I like both when nicely made!

That vise is a beast 45 kg, personally I prefer rear jaw moves backwards for many reasons and mostly aesthetically
woodworking then yes front jaw moves forward however when working with metal and specifically smaller items then jaw moving back seems best to me
