I tried applying some gold leaf recently, that stuff is mental tricky. It's a few atoms thick (150?) and if you breathe anywhere near it, it will sprinkle your precious gold like a party popper. That stuff gets everywhere and will stick forever to anything other than your workpiece!

I have tried those gold marker pens in the past.
Good for a short term bling effect. But the do fade and can look like a paint marker.

But you can use the fine tipped ones on the letters what are not well cast.

Can be a pain.
Most people don't invest in a good transfer brush. Do not apply talc to the areas were they don't want the leaf.
Let the seize dry out.
Or don't prep enough.

I enjoy doing gold, silver and other leafs.
It gives 3am a purpose.

What color paint?

speaking of colours, my research has identified that my latest German vice originally had orange paint, i noticed a few bits of orange paint on all sides of mine so it does appear to have been originally orange
not sure i could paint a vice orange, i might get ridiculed on this site
photo taken off youtube, someone in Germany has the same vice albeit larger, and doesnt know the manufacturer either!

In my defense each and every one of them is broken, siezed, missing parts or <all of the above>.

So they will require attention and the plan is to video it all...

@Arc Tourist yeah that ball vice is a keeper (and maybe the giant Swindens).

How big is the big Swindens? Nice to see an early pre-anvil one

Hello all
Latest one to land, an early Parkinson's.
I thought this was going to be smaller than it is (it looked smallish in the pics..) However its jaws are just over 4" wide so i'm guessing it's the equivalent of a later No7.
It's very heavy, seems heavier than a later No7. I've never had one of the earlier type before & I'm rather pleased with it. To give an idea of size see 3in1 oil can on it & the Parky next to it is a later No8.
Could the green possibly be the original colour ? It's certainly been on there a long time & i can't see any traces of other colours on it.

Don’t suppose you two have done a colour match on those parkinsons, ie taken it to a paint shop and had a formula analysed would love to know the colour

This came up for sale locally to me, and is now in the forging area of the workshop
Needs a thrust washer making to replace the sprockets that have been added in its place

Part of me thinks wire brush it and give it some paint, the other part thinks just wipe it with linseed oil and get on with it

I was surprised I couldn’t find other examples online, other than a picture of one on Pinterest. It feels like it should be in a buck hickman catalogue, but Google books is a bit of a rabbit hole.

It’s really solid in use which is the main thing, but still nice to have something with a bit of design to it too

They made ornamental lathes that were used by the upper classes for hobby turning, the work that could be made on one is truly amazing. It should be noted here that in Holtzapffel both word components did not correspond to the German spelling of the words "Holz" = wood and "Apfel" = apple.

Strasbourg has changed nationality between France and Germany several times over the centuries and has enjoyed and still enjoys a quasi-European status.

More than 200 years ago - as today - people came here to study (Goethe) and religious and other persecutees also fled here - although there were also various pogroms here.

The descent of Holtzapffel with a French first name (like the father) reveals the family's orientation.

The name could indicate either a Jewish or Huguenot family; the fact that this name is most widespread in the Netherlands today points to the latter; many followers of the reformer Calvin went there. Both groups were repeatedly subjected to persecution in Catholic France.

The London firm was called Holtzapffel & Deyerlein

until the German-born partner Deyerlein died in 1826, from then on Holtzapffel & Co.

Many - also German - engineers and master builders visited the London workshops and some also worked there for a while before they achieved fame in their own country.

I read somewhere that the ornamental lathe could be set to make a pattern the cutting of which would take several lifetimes ,I saw one of the lathes for sale 30 plus years ago for 10 grand ,it sold pretty quick

Seem to recall Clickspring doing an example pattern with a Rose engine lathe. Fascinating really.

It does open, but is very stiff.

It will get a lot of TLC soon.
