the chamber pot is/was called the po' in much of England, especially the north (pronounced quite like the River Po)

... so in this case (like Po in northern Italy) this could be from porcelain rather than poo, or what were these things made of in those days in the general population?

Whereas, the common people might have continued to have wooden buckets and half-jokingly used the term for the porcelain bowls of the upper classes ...

With the flat hub it's 1967 or later as we have determined previously from the forum contributors

and also see Record Tools 1967 pocket catalogue below.

Their 1963 catalogue showed the older round hub.

Even at my advanced years it's not something I've ever had the need for, as in the South of England we have indoor plumbing. The chamber pot was also known as the 'thunder jug', a 'jerry' a 'guzunder' or a Jordan. Used to see a lot of them at antique fairs back in the day as the larger ones were popular with Americans who used them as soup tureens. My sister had several as plant pots, no I don't see the attraction either.

Now that is a sight - I guess you live in one of the best places for vices from old heavy engineering works (v sadly) closing down.

don't try to test your steel toe caps with those, and make sure your back and bench are strong enough.

There's a vice marked Noveto 110 Brevete with this jaw action - looks quite modern but shown in Buck and Hickman 1935 (also a 5 1/2in version, I presume that would be Noveto 160) sounds Italian to me but brevete looks French (for patented) whereas Italian would be brevetto or brevetatto, I think. So ? French/Belgian/Swiss?

Yup it's not cheap, but if in fair nick might be worth £100 (or more) to collector or user - rarity, special applications.

You have an indoor jacksie - wow. That means you could use the old outdoor one as a vice shed, if you take out the old situpon/bog/can - or would it just be a hole in the ground. Next you'll be telling me you have a roll of that soft toilet paper - what's wrong wi Bronco, Izal or old pages from the Racing Post?

It depends:
"Noveto" (Ital.) and "Breveté" (French) = "Patented Noveto" together in one designation almost certainly indicates Swiss origin .....

.... but: If the accent above the last "e" is missing, another Romanic language comes into consideration, which one always tends to forget, and this origin can perhaps be brought more in line with heavier, coarser products - Romanian, where it would then be called "New Patent".

Are there any signs in this direction?

The 1935 Buck and Hickman lists "The 'Noveto' Universal Vice" - doesn't say where made, and shows one side only with Noveto 110 cast in, but lists 2 sizes, and fixed or swivel base; they also describe its action and say the swivel parts and jaws are of 'high tensile, tempered steel' and the body is cast (core moulded) in special heat treated alloy steel. They don't show the other side, but I'm think from memory that it has just the word Brevete (maybe in capitals, so no accent). Unlike the Fortis/Ajax/Coventry/Herbert it does not have quick release.

I could be wrong, but I believe Wabbit has one??

On the same page there's an "All-angles" Mounting for vices - two sizes, and interestingly available in 3 alloys, at 3 prices - Grey Iron; Semi-steel (che cosa?); Malleable iron (in ascending price). Again, not common, but I think I have seen one referenced (on these pages?) but can't find much on a cursory web search. ---- Wabbit?

Myself --- I was lucky enough to pick up a big Record No6, in fairish nick, which I'm not after but a stand was thrown in - which pleased me much more - quite slim, but nicely cast, with just "No 0" cast in - which is a typical English vice-type sizing - ring any bells? It has obviously been set deeply in concrete at one time but can be cleaned. I also have another cast iron stand in the works - probably was for a heavy grinder but ideal for a biggish vice.

Yeah, yeah I know, pictures will come, but don't hold your breath.

How interesting to deal with it on two consecutive days, after a lifetime of not hearing about it.

I was offered a four-jaw chuck for the lathe and to my great suspicion this term appeared.

According to your knowledge of your language, is "french invention" in this text equivalent to "this vise is this invention" or rather "this vise followed in its construction a french invention" - thank you, I just want to understand, not be right.

Back to school Danny -- 5 1/2in is of course more like 140 than 160 (mm) - for some reason I timesd (infant school word) 25.4 (now why does that figure ring a bell?) by 6 not 5 then 'added approx 12.7'.

When we first moved here the kludgie was used as my workshop until a more spacious one was built.

woops - so is mine, I meant khazi -- I'm actually so posh, I never use any of these words. And I have only lived up north for 53 years, so am new to the lingo.
My grandad had a semi in Wandsworth near the gasworks - there was a tiny room with a genuine flush wc by Crapper on the top floor shared with lodgers until a V1 rocket wiped out the neighbouring pair of semis in 1944, while my great grandad was actually sitting on the mahogany seat (left exposed with trousers down as one wall of our house collapsed, but he survived) - the main loo was outside. My dad (then a med student fixing the wounded) and his brother had their private joke that it wasn't the doodlebug but grandad farting that did the damage, but daren't tell himself.
Long after our family, that house sold for over £3 mill a few years ago. Whoa - who can afford that? For that you could buy the whole one side of our street here in Sheffield, similar date houses, slightly smaller, but all with an indoor bathroom or two

Enough of this scatological banter - I want info on heavy woodworking pre-quick-release vices made in the Bradford area - anyone??
