Looking at the head form, escutcheon pins. They're not screws, as they're not slotted.

No. No I don't think that's right. Pretty sure they are in fact drive screws, i.e. screws without a slotted head.

No idea, not a term I've met before. Nails, pins all the same sort of thing to me, not things I ever used when on my tools. Just thought it was unlikely that you'd attach brass plate to a wooden pattern with rivets.

I can't imagine you'd use a rivet or blind rivet either but drive screws are the fastener of choice for metal tags so I assume that is in fact what has been used in these examples where a tag has been fixed to a pattern prior to moulding.

The patterns were beech. The tags were interchangeable between differant moulds. In Fareham they were brass pins.

Well if we are being serious again, yes! They might actually be even more difficult to remove than usual, certainly more so than a plain "pin".
saw this one recently, had been painted a matt spu pink colour all over including springs , nut, release bar and all sliding surfaces
no one wanted it due to the colour, so a got it for very little money and i will give it a future that it doesn't have to be ashamed of.

i can stop buying vices however i couldn't refuse this i have been looking for one of these (im assuming at this stage) Entwisle and Kenyon instantaneous grip vices for a long time now and this is a 9 inch in prefect working order although missing the very end of the handle which may of been wooden, very dirty, rusty and oily, havent pulled it apart yet and may not, i might just leave it in all its glory

What I did find out was theye were cast ina London Foundry for differant people.

Great to see these two fine chunks of cast iron.
I believe Ranger's is an Entwistle and Kenyon - the end of the handle was cast iron - I've seen more than one broken off like this - I've found a cast iron door handle of nearly the right shape, need to grind the faces, drill and tap and join. This was an obvious weak point, when they made the bench version of these they made the handle of wrought iron or similar - my example has been beaten flat, but not broken
This type of vice is great, and sought after, for jobs where you need to change the opening quickly (better than the Parky/Record QR?) but is not a 'maximum pressure' style.
I believe Ardvark's is a different make - Wilson Riley (also licensed to Massey in USA) - sold by Syers of Finchley, London. Maybe also Buttlers and Palmers? - not heard that before - tell us more Ardvark.
Both of these were patented in 1870 (WR a few days before EK) more than a decade before J Parkinson's patent for his quick release, which carried all before it. The WR and EK were not made for long (the US Massey version for longer). The WR has a fixed cam/screw section, whereas the EK's is loose (if buying, make sure it's not missing) they may have the words 'steel rack' cast in, this is not the name of the vice, the EK usually has their name on the cam and the WR usually has Syers etc stamped on the rear jaw top and a patent no. cast into the handle.
I'm surprised if you have found a London foundry for these, as all the above makers had their own foundries in or near their works within 15 miles of Bradford, where there was already a strong tradition of cast iron woodworking vice making - (Woodhead and others from ~1860). But then, Massey did start making them soon after in USA, so why not a London maker also given a license?

Interestingly, the Bradford area makers like these often sold their vices ready built in to a bench with cast iron base (certainly Woodhead and WR/Syers did) and often the legs of the base were more informative than the vice with cast in words about maker etc. And came with inventive tail vices as well. So I suppose these were quite costly and the main buyers may have been factory owners?
Anyone have more info on the earlier non-QR vices like Woodhead Cramp (who later moved a few miles to Leeds and made springs and shock absorbers for railways then cars -- "Woodhead Shox" - in a big way)???

Thanks for all that info so much appreciated, i was thinking of turning a native hardwood handle knob for it? Will check the cam tomorrow,
