I've pinched a pic from ebay again, this time still for sale (buyitnow) - this is one of the very heavy duty ww bench vices probably from before the QR patents in 1877 - you can see the up-pointing arrow head above the boss, (some have one arrow superimposed on another) as on the Syers, which is why I suspect it might be from Wilson Riley or their works near Bradford. The examples I have are not as clean as this but are massive and will last forever if kept in use.
Again it's located in W Yorks (over the years I've seen a couple from further, but mostly there, giving some indication that their maker might have been close).
Regarding the QR vs not - obviously it's turns of the screw to change settings, but it's a massive steel screw and nut, there's no spring to break or weaken and would take a lot to get clogged or jammed.

PS - if it's an auction, I wouldn't show the pic till sold, as folks might want it kept quiet, but a buy-it-now, you either buy or not.
