You set me off researching.......
The 4B sounds like a designation that Parkinsons may have used but their range of numbers ended at 3e and that was a huge 8" jaw size.
The other strange thing is the cast mark of "British Make". That's unusual as normally it would be "Made in Britain" or "British Made".
Opposite side solely cast as "LEADER". This was a mark used by Record, but I recall also Leader as a brand from somewhere before - ???
Unusual vice, not QA, straight hub so guessing anytime since 1935 (the Record Mechanics vices 00 - 8 used a straight hub as early as 1935 per their 1935 catalogue) and not in great condition, jaw missing etc. And very pricey.
The housing shape is very similar to a Record 84, but very unlike the Record Mechanics series.
It is also not the same in many ways to the Parkinson Handy.
Parkinson =
Same - No 2
Different - No 1 & 3 & 4 & 5
No 6 Flat hub the same as Record.
Some big differences to the handy (obviously we don't have parkinson data for many years and they could have designs that do match closer over those blank years.
Interesting to look at that.

I've been busy recently
Bagged a little Vono (i'm pleased to get another Vono) what I think is a small Parkinsons Handy (opinions welcomed), a small un-named one (ditto on this does anyone know who it's by perhaps ?) & a tiny little clamp on Rededa.

The Vono looks in lovely nick. The 0a is deffo a Handy 0a (the table in my post above shows the dimensions and weight to check). And looks good nick too. The older design 3 piece is anon but could be an early Parky too. Love to see a Rededa in such original paint too. ExcellentHello all

I see you have what looks like a steel Record Leader series on the shelf next to the Rededa - is that right? What size is it?

Yep it's a Record Leader but smallest I've ever seen i think it's a 10a model. It's the only one I've seen of that type can't see it in any catalogues only the bigger ones.

Collected my new acquisition today.
Woden Steel 190.7
4 1/2" jaws, Quick action lever and Steel body.
A bit of a rarity as the 7 was considered too heavy vs their competitors and Woden introduced the 7a which was 11lbs lighter & a little lower in price.
The 7 and 7a are shown in their 1931 catalogue
1931 catalogue text launching 7a.
but in their 1951 catalogue the 7 is removed leaving only the 7a .
Anyway, another real special thing about the vice I collected today is a Brass nameplate on the side.

It shows The Letter A CROWN M and inside the crown what looks like
Dated 19 September 1939
Anyone any ideas where that originated????

I ask as I have seen and known natives adding brass tags to vices.
If it is a WD, AM or one of the others departments it will be satmped up.

I’ll have to examine closer tomorrow for any stamping.
The provenance of the vice is that it came from an uncle who passed and the guy was selling off all his tool shop items.
My opinion a completely straight guy. Even went into his employer’s factory and met him before going out to his car to pick up the vice. We had a nice chat and he was an engineer in production at 1st Wythenshaw.
Amazing factory - I walked right across it to be introduced to him!
The advert did not even mention AM and it just said he thought the plate showed the production date!! The advert showed this photo of it. The AM and Crown is almost illegible. I didn’t even realise until after I bought it.
I polished it a bit on receipt to make out the plate better and saw the detail.
I’ve no doubt at all that the vice and plate are contemporary and genuine.

Hello StevieO, Here's the pics of that Record Leader I have.
I can't find a Leader this small in catalogues, they're all bigger.
Limited production, prototype, demo' model, who knows ??
