Nice one Cyril, let's have another one.

I've got one almost the same and they made a similar, but all-steel mini vice with slightly wider jaws.

And here's another Rededa from Neepsend, Sheffield

Someone bagged this Rededa off eb a short while ago - (rarity?, I just pinched the picture) smooth, wide jaws and a little like a German clamp on we were discussing a while back.

Never mind luxury hols, here in Sheffield we have had to bring in the grape - here's a few bottles worth of red from outdoor black grape harvested on the allotment earlier this week at 100m above sea level right next to Skye Edge where they've just been filming a re-run of The Full Monty. My wife gave me a b'day pressy of a small oak barrel a couple of years ago, so when these have settled down from the current fermentation it's out of the barrel with the '21 and in with the '22. Also goes well as a Kir Communard with the Creme de cassis made from our bl- blackcurrants.

What's this to do with vices - nothing - just to show we have another life.

We'll see in a couple of years. I'm not going to put the wine up against a good Bordeaux but it's not been bad and others have said the same - certainly fine for mixing and coque au vin, chasseur, bourguignon etc. I tried a few other grapes with lesser results but now have five Marachel Foch vines rambling over shed and trellis - 27 kg grapes this year and because of the hot spells reached brix 22 which should mean 12% alc for a dry red with no added sugar. And the oak barrel does help.

Note that my feet came nowhere near this.

The remaining elderberry wine from 2008 is more like what you're thinking of, but even that has its uses - eg mulled wine for unwanted carol singers ---- aaah that's not fair on the poor dears but at least it should keep em warm on a cold night. And yes we do have carollists here on the wrong side of the trax in Sheff.

You must be thinking of the wine scandal of the 80s when they found ethyl glycol (anti-freeze) had been added to Austrian and German wines (even, whisper it, some French?). Ranger's family coulda told you that peapods were cheaper than anti-freeze.

PS there's a cast iron Leader 3A vice on eb just now - advertised as Record, but isn't, seen 3 now - I think they musta been a brand in their own right, maybe Record took em over and then used the name for their steel fab vices - can't find any references. Another manufacturer
for the British vice history book.

No slight intended on you brewing Dan, my dad had a brewing fad where wine was made from anything. Most, if not all went down the drain. I am, according to my wine drinking family and friends, a philistine. I can't stand the stuff and would rather have a pint of lager any day. The nearest I get to wine now is a packet of Maynards.

Finally got round to bolting my new vice down to the bench. Sorry for the "new" content, but I need to crack on with all my vehicular projects.

Dolex 57-150 shipped and forwarded from France to Ireland and in the process acquired a bent handle. Too much hassle returning (the different carriers will just blame each other). Cast steel, 20kg, and still made in France. Pretty much the same as the ones from the 1950s, but with a pressed steel rotating base rather than a casting.

Finally cleared the bench and got it (and the optional extra rotating base) bolted down to the bench.

Also bought the accessory magnetic jaw set.

Poss been ground clean of weld splatter sometime in its life - removing most of the script? eg can see Made ----- but then nothing. Also, although looks in quite good shape is a bit rough behind the replacement jaws. Yes - unusual base. Different version, anyway.

Attended the Runway Monday Antiques fair, Newark this week. It's primarily for traders and trends in fashion and collecting often appear earlier here before becoming mainstream. It would appear that Singer sowing machines are in vogue and commanding higher prices. What was also noticeable was the number of rusted bench vices on offer. This could be due to the number of work benches now seen as fashionable rustic kitchen tables or they are indeed becoming desirable in their own right. No I didn't buy one, management and I got very little, always a lot of fun though.

Picked up a nice record 52 1/2 for reasonable money, been on the look out for one for a while. I know they are not rare but tend to be not reasonably priced over here either

very pleased to see posts from new members lamfada and macplxton - the vices, yes, but the extreme bench jumble ('finally cleared the bench', eh? plaxton?) make my benches look almost usable (they're not, but will be as soon as I -----) ---- love it
