I'll probably sound like a broken record here, try electrolytic rust removal. On castings it seems very good at removing paint, on plate steel it leaves the paint untouched unless there is rust under it.

Took ages carefully filing and then when very close I finished it with valve lapping paste, but the swivel jaw actually swivels nicely now!
Could do with lapping the pin to the hole though, it's a little wobbly.

I'd like to give you good news but it’s useless. It had softened up some small patches but after being left nearly 24 hours in an airtight container to prevent it drying it was very disappointing. I removed more using the pressure washer. I’m going to use the sand blaster with crushed glass on it next but that probably won’t be until the weekend now.

Yeah, it does look kind of artsy. Consider putting it in a contemporary art gallery with a £50,000.00 price tag on it. Surly there is some woke punter out there with more money than brains that would snatch it up.

At least you wouldn't be able to tell when you drip paint on it!

forget boiled linseed oil - it's oven cleaner and car wax from now on

In all seriousness, I get good results with mr muscle stripping paint of plastics. On metal, I'd have just gone at that with a wire wheel by now!

does look good brightens up the darkest garage on a grey wet day

Yes, 4 different colour paints have graced the poor vice with only a bit of the original Parkinson red left. I'm not sure it’s art worthy though.

I was actually being serious. It has a patina which appeals to me for some unspecified reason with a unique colour scheme that would be difficult to mimic.

Jackson Pollock eat your heart out. I think it is "one of those things" like Jesus on toast that pops up only rarely but if you don't see it, then I guess you'll wipe it away and end up with something that looks exactly like every other vice...

I kind of agree with you, the paint shows it's history and stripping it away merely makes it 'another vice.' Years ago when we were buying cheap Victorian furniture for the house, mainly because it was cheap, I would strip, stain and polish the heck out of it. Now, clean and make good is all I'd do. Likewise my guitars, I'd sand, polish etc, now again its clean, possibly an oil coat and make good. I like to do the same with my tools, make good, clean and use them. If when I've sold them the next own wants to sand blast and paint with No 343 gloss from B&Q that's fine, but it's only original once, looks like that once and while its mine it stays that way.

Yeah. I've refurbished and painted a lot of tools, but every once in awhile something comes along that just exudes character in such a pleasant way, that to strip and paint it, would be like killing it. My record Auto Vice is an example, unabused with a great patina; I only touched up the lettering with a gold coloured metal pen.
