This may be a very stupid question and the answer blindingly obvious, but how is this vice attached to a bench? There appears to be a recess in the bottom casting, is here a piece missing? I've a couple very similar but both have a clamp.
The recessed part is bolted to the bench, the bit that hangs lower over hangs the edge of the bench.

The plan is to let some trusted members of a MIS have a tinker.
I have another precision clock makers vice with the symbol stamped into top side of the jaw, usually with a W on the opposing jaw, and have seen several for sale, they are not uncommon, however never seen it cast in.
May I ask, is that S York's MIS? I sometimes give tools to the Hawley collection or Sheff tools for Africa, but MIS might also like a project or two as you suggest.
