Take a look at this unusual Fortis. I've never seen one with the adjustable front jaw before.

I have the version without the adjustable jaws, I don't feel they are as well finished as the records of the same era but I like them they are a good well made vice and just as strong.

Aye for me Records are the only one really. Owned a Woden before, it was okay but the machining has a bit more play with them I find. I dream of finding a Dohm turret vice in NZ.

There are a wide range of models of vice made by Record and I'd be willing to bet that there was more care taken in the machining of the top of the range cast steel vices than there was in a bog standard home owner vice, I'd bet Woden/Fortis/Parkinson/ etc also had the same price/quality relationship .... of course Swindens should be left out of this comparison

Rescued today, from an old set of stables.

That is how I got it home.

It is free to move and the grease is still soft, shame about the missing foot.

I am posting it again in today I acquired as I "adopted something else.

A very fair point! I treated myself to one of the SG iron ones, restored it and it's served me excellently. The luxury of being able to hit it as hard as you like is something I enjoy and use frequently! Still wouldn't mind that fortis I linked, but I just spent $100 on circlip pliers, bearing pullers and imperial Allen keys for another unfinished project... Too many good vices, not enough time/money!

picked up this today, not sure if its rare, ivr not seen a 6" swindens before, its a monster next to a 4" version, nothing seized and all bolts come undone, needs a good clean, and make am shim to take some play out of the handle,
i also have another one delivered to me next Tues which i will keep,

Probably just use an engine hoist and a trailer for that, no hi-ab required

I was interested in the Fortis adjustable I linked until it jumped to $200 last night and the reserve still not met! I may be addicted but I'm not stupid.. more money for the future lathe fund

I think my addiction is getting worse - I bought another vice tonight, that's 3 within a 2 week period!

It's a Woden 186B/4, my first Woden vice. It's got a liberal coating of weld snotter on the jaws but the slide is clean & it opens & closes ok. It should clean up ok but I bought the vice mainly for its attachment.

It came attached to a sturdy steel table with a 4mm steel top, perfect for a welding table!

It belonged to the sellers Grandfather so I reckon it's probably at least 60 years old!
