its touch dry after about 60mins and ready to rock after 12hrs. they made the paint for the forth rail bridge so cant be all bad...

like you matt, I hate seeing vices that have had a poor paint job and then advertised as restored, its almost like they throw the paint over them.

The crappy paint jobs, (the Stevie Wonder specials, as I like to call them ), must be one of my main irks. A poor paint job is bad enough in itself, (it's an extra amount of work, having to remove some unnecessary, crap paint job), but when they use the term restored or renovated along with it, it really is just taking the mick. Half the time, you can see a really rough surface under the paint 'cos they've not even bothered cleaning the crap off it first either. Some folk truly do make me wonder.

I'm not one of these who thinks that you have to spend hours/days getting a concourse type finish, but there's a big difference between decent/acceptable and just slapped on. Better to just leave well alone than do a half arsed job, IMHO.

There's a pin that goes right through the handle and lead screw and has been battered on both ends to stop it coming out, there is a blind pin holding the cam on with nothing left above the surface to grab and then there is a blind pin at the back end of the leadscrew that also acts as a rotational stop, I can probably just grab that one and pull it out. I need to remove the cam pin and either the handle pin or the rotational stop pin, rotational stop pin is my favourite at the moment. The cam pin will probably have to be built up with some weld to give me something to grab.

At the moment I have the dynamic slide and leadscrew in the tank still assembled to see how it cleans up, would be nice it it could stay together but I doubt my ocd will allow that.

Matt: Your 8A makes the 7 look cute The 8A is in lovely condition, a light rub with an oily rag or very fine wire wool soaked in oil will make that original paint look great, it's still got quite a bit left under the dirt. Will look lovely with it's history intact

They can waste their time putting a rubbish paint job on if they like so long as they don't try charging restored prices! One of my Records had a new paint job on top of rust that you could wipe off with a finger :-/ Luckily it was cheap and nearby

The old e-tank is great for lifting paint off, old or new (unless it was put on properly)

I'd be tempted to drill those blind pins out, and take the hole all way through for future ease of assembly & disassembly, if doing that won't interfere with anything.

The 7 definitely seems smaller now than it did. Going to try the nylon scourers and kerosene first off on the 8A. They're usually enough to remove this type of light tarnish and corrosion. I have some fine wire wool knocking about if it's stubborn though. Definitely going to keep it original. Looks like there may be quite a lot of original paint left on there, barring the jaw tops. The PO has fitted smooth inserts too, which is a nice perk.

No fear; I'll be inflicting plenty of crap quality photo's on everyone. One day, my photography skills might actually be worth a jot, unlike currently.

Have you seen this before ?
It's a jaw from the Wilson Riley vice I'm working on, if you look carefully it's made of two parts. What appears to be a soft backing with a hard facing by the looks of it and one seems to have been eroded more than the other. I noticed the erosion on the other jaw but it's more obvious on this one.

After the first dip in the tank seems they are through holes if you look really carefully But they won't budge They might get some heat tonight to persuade them before they go back in the tank.

Cleaned that Parkinson 8A up. Absolutely no alteration to it bar a strip down, cleaning and the addition of four brass washers on the insert bolts with this one. Remembering my last side by side photo of it with the No.7:

I can honestly say that the next side by side made me feel guilty enough to decide that the No.7 wants a full fettling now too, seeing as that one is my main work horse.

That's a brilliant turn around of the 8A It has far more paint than it looked like before. You have done well there ... now sort out the No 7

I'll post a picture of the 114's jaw that needs repair in a minute, looks like it's been hit with a cutting or plasma torch :-/

I've not had a chance to have a go at the Wilsons pins yet as I'm decorating my sons room ....

I was surprised by how much original paint was there underneath the grime. Even the top of the rear jaw, which originally looked like it was just bare metal and rust, had a surprising amount of paint left on there.

Those smooth jaws are factory too, not a later addition as I first thought.

I have a Parkinson model F No7. No idea how old it is, my father had it as long as I can remember, I'm 65 now, & when I was very small it looked just as old as it does now. I have no idea where it came from, I am sure he didn't buy it new. I have never thought of restoring it I've just abused it from when I was big enough to use it, not going to put a picture up, after seeing others I'm ashamed of the state of it.
