Some procedure testing from a few months back. The butt was Tig root/hot pass with elga P48S a hot running (115-150amps if I remember right?) deep penetrating 7018.
Used 3.2 for the first few passes then 4mm then back to 3.2s for the cap. Over 250 rods in total, around 12-14 hours worth lol. And a 3 run fillet as a supplement test.

This stainless one was full tig, 1.6mm rods for root, then 2.4mm all the way out. Interpass temperature of only 150°c so forever waiting for it to cool down once got a few runs in. That one also took hours, 16hrs in total.

serious bit of pipe there , nice job .. the wee fiddly bits will look tasty done though .What is it going to be , if your allowed to say.

The little spool? Its part of a stainless system for a chemical plant thats all, shampoo, detergents, washing powders and that sort of thing. The job had a few dairy gauge spools like the little one along with a few 4" sched 40, but mostly 8" sched 40 like this double elbow 2 into 1 spool. Around 100 butts and maybe 20 slip-ons in all and was subject to 100% NDT, Dye pen for the slipons and all the butts were bombed.

One flange capped...

And the point where the butt between the elbows meets the cap around the bottom flange

Some of it was a proper PITA for the fitters when it came to marking out and cutting cutting it. The trouser legs for one, but also had a couple of spools with a 2" pipe passing through an elbow and then running centrally inside the 8". Not my area of expertise at all though, i just do the tacking and welding part lol

Somewhere ashamed of showing this here, but hey who became an expert without being a newbie first ?
Practicing flat and angle TIG on 2mm aluminium with 2.4 mm green and 2.4 mm rod, no pedal for the moment.
Trying various settings and speed on flat beads.

I ran out of gas later, it was a good opportunity to see what happens then !

is that a small tack at 4 o clock
you might find bridge tacks that hold the gap but dont go near the edges easier to begin with

The legs weren't rusty when I done it. The bench itself is galvi, hence why I never stitched it upwards. Used to be a walking platform/gantry on the back of a low loader. Stand on it and stick Road cones out while the vans moving. Had a bit of box section kicking around give it some legs and made a bench out of it.
Random bits underneath I never took off had lights/control panel attached to it. Serve no purpose for the bench.

bring your fill pass/passes to just under the flush you may need additional fill over the top keep the cap tight just enough to cover the edges , multipass cap may be required eg 2 runs check procedure
a max interpass temp may apply too
you may find it better to cap if you let it cool down a bit before capping

Personally i would practice straight stringer runs until you can get them neat, that will help you with your heat/puddle control. And remember, weaving is not always permitted.

Ok, here’s a few of my attempts at fillets/pad-straight welds..with my new mask…
The tube (20mm 1.5 wall ) to angle is at 90A.
Can’t remember what the straight runs were…

Oh, I just realised, those straight runs above, were stick weld with a 1/16 rod…not Tig! Oops…and sorry for the pigeon poop at the start…..it’s bin a while since I did any stick welding…

i hate stick welding, it's like welding having one of your arms cut off. unless its half inch thick i wouldn't touch a stick welder with a barge pole.
with a mig i'll cross my wrists which aint too bad. but i hate using stick.
