Ive just bought this for something more sedate on a sunday morning...keeping my TL but the missus said she wont go on the back again after she felt the front wheel come up in 3rd so ime sure she,ll be fine on the Yam. Anyway ive never owned a TDM,anyone had one?

my wife was pillion with me, we had throw over oxford panniers and spent a week cruising around north of scotland. she said it was a very comfy bike with a nice pillion position.

I've got a TRX 850 same or very similar engine, had it from new it's a sunny day bike really.
Oil level is a bit of a pain to check in these as its a dry sump engine and easy to overfill. Best way is to run the bike up for 10 minutes so it's hot then turn off and leave it for a few minutes before checking the level with the bike upright. Don't let it stand too long as the oil can drain back out of the tank and give a false reading.
Low speed pickup and on off throttle response can be improved with a bit of fiddling to the carb needles and upping the idle a bit also helps smooth things out.

No, but I have owned twins from Triumph, Moto Guzzi, Ducati, and Harley Davidson. I rode (ran in ) one of the first TRXs when they came in. The thing about these' low tech " lesser horsepower twins, is that as Road bikes, they rock. You can cover quite a lot of ground at a decent rate of progress with a decent riding position which gives good command of the road ahead.
They have a nice power balance, so are good on back B roads as well as on more open A roads.
And most folks find the engine theraputic.
The TDM is the logical all round develpment from the (I think?) Super Tenere IMHO.
A machine often overlooked.

The trx was a parallel twin wasn't it ? It was never as popular a bike as it should have been really. The crank in those was 270/90 degree which gave the engine the characteristics of a v-twin, but in a parallel twin engine.

The XTZ 750 was a 180° crank they then completely updated it to the TDM / TRX with the 270° cranks.
As far as I know it was the first of the so called big bang / cross plane crank Yamaha's! Triples excepted as they are naturally a cross plane set up.
Also a dry sump, what looks like a stacked gearbox and 5 valves per cylinder.
Quite a high Tec engine at the time but they never sold that many due to the high cost of them.
I'll ONLY sell mine if I need the cash for buying my perfect house......

It's 19 years old. It was just the wrong side of a grand. It's in great condition, low miles but genuine rust in all the right places!

Thats good value. They are a nice bike, you are not in the racing crouch.

Yeah it's quite a lazy feeling bike to ride. Engines super smooth. I wanted to get something that wouldn't make me ride like an idiot and this seems to fit the bill!

Yes, I seem to recall that Yamaha were trying to offer an alternative to the Ducati twins I think. My impression of the first ones was it was the classic Japanese bike, excellent motor, let down by cost cutting in other areas.
The chassis was fine, I found the brakes to be a bit wooden , especially the rear, and there was bad driveline lash.
I think that was sorted on the late bikes, and in fact, I think some lads raced them at club level.
Probably worth hanging on to if you have one in standard form;

I know what you mean..every time i take my TL out for a run it commands so much of your attention and brings out the devil in the rider it can get out of hand...the TDM on the other hand is a bike that settles your nerves and lets you enjoy the ride

Owned this since new, been written off once, crashed by me twice, I've trackdayed it, commuted on it, and it's been round most of Europe. Zx9rF2:

This was after the last rebuild, 30,000 miles later and a fair few winters she's looking a tad sorry now :-(

Had this since 1988, awaiting a rebuild as i basically wore it out!

Did some racing on this too:

Not sure if I'm going to keep this one, never really got on with it, that's got a Bob farnham motor as well. RD350 YPVS F2 maquerading as an N2

Yet another TZR, the rest of it is in the shed, one of the last ones 1991 reg. Will turn into a race bike on the road at some point


There is also the dead DRz400SM (busted flywheel and other bits), Zx7R Race/Track (Bits collecting atm but nearly there), another TZR hybrid special that's in the lounge atm (waiting on swingarm decisions), and the little Honda Foresight 250 Scooter that gets me to work every day without fail :-)

So many projects, so little time!

It's good fun, I did a couple of 'proper' trials on it, but I started way too late really, I can do the easy routes with no issue but the harder stuff just ends in embarrasment

It's a bit battered but i guess if you use that type of bike properly they won't stay mint for long.
