What a great thread - some lovely machinery there

here's a photo of mine - had it about a year and only just got a round to cleaning it and opiling everything.

It's an Atlas TV 36 which I think means it's a 10" F series (?) with a 36" bed. All seems to work well enough for my capabilities although the bed is pitted and slightly worn in the middle.

Been practising with the few tools I've got - any suggestions as to where to obtain a good basic set of tools

Well, you saved me putting a pic up of mine. It is a Sphere, just like yours but with a different tool holder. (and yours is much cleaner)
Made under licence from Atlas and was free + two boxes of chucks and tools.
It rattles a bit and the cross slides are a bit loose, but makes some useful bits

That's a 10F alright - it's identical to my old one.

Don't neglect to grease the countershaft (the top shaft with the lever for loosening the belt). You un-screw the caps from the ends of the shaft, fill them with grease then screw them back on, winding them in a little once in a while to force grease in through the hole. Also keep the bed liberally oiled coz they wear fast and don't use a grinder to cut things off in the chuck - a big no-no on a lathe.

Most of those tools are over-sized for your lathe, you'd be better off buying for HSS blanks or taking a drive up to Homeandworkshop in Sidcup on a Saturday morning, they have tons of tooling.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have been through the Atlas manual and oiled/greased all 28 points. Hope it's ok to use 5W/30 as I didn't have any SAE 10.

Not sure I'm up to grinding my own tools yet so i'll check out some of the recommendations

Funny you should say most of the tools are oversize for my machine - I somehow feel more comfortable with bigger tools (what have I just said ) - my best results have been with the 3/4 inch round tip tool. At the moment I'm just using odd bits of steel that i have managed to scrounge from local workshops

Two ceramic chip forges, a sensitive pillar drill and about 200 quids worth of tooling followed me home last time I ate one of their bacon sandwiches

My old warhorse. A Harrison L5A with the 2.25 threaded nose.

Dating from the early 60's if the bed stamp is to be believed.

That would be correct 1962, i had the newer flat topped 140 with Norton gearbox i reckon 65/66. Newer existing models M300 prototype saw light of day just after that.

Great machines worn mine out in 9 years, a chinese might have lasted 3 months.

drive belt

Mine's an early 1950's ZYTO.
Bought it last year off an older relative who bought it new!
He made a hefty profit on the deal!

PS. anyone know where to buy 3/4" wide flat drive belt material from?

I did up an old drummond for sale last year and I stripped it down to fit an auxillary belt off a scrap car notched side up and it worked a treat.

cheers mat. i've spent a long time doing it. totally stripped it every nut and bolt replaced loads of parts including the bed. it looks pretty good now

Hers my two - the Viceroy gets used a lot and is in need of a lot of TLC , but I couldnt be without for long enough to fix it up

And its big brother - a Woodhouse and Mitchel `Junior' - in use as a power log splitter at the moment !

Splitting logs on a lathe, we've just lost half our members to heart attacks.

When I first looked at the Viceroy I thought somone had filled your suds tank up with bubble bath

I have about the same size pile of alum swarf but mines on the floor at the end of my lathe. Trying to think of something to make from it...Bob

Maybe This is a dumb question but isn't that a bit of a fire hazard?

You mean the swarf or the log-splitting? I don't see either as a fire hazard. When you think about what a wood lathe or bowl turner produces a few chips of wood is nothing.

I know wire wool burns really easily and have a vague memory of burning aluminium and iron filings in science at school.
