When I did my bathroom shower install I used proper water resistant backing boards.
Then a specialist shower waterproof tanking tape. It is very sticky and attaches to the outside of the tray. Then offer the tray into place and stick it to the backing board. This allows for a permanent flexible water proof seal behind the tray and lapped up the wall. (Black tape just visible below)
Then I overlaid shower boards and decorative mould resistant silicone. The silicone is therefore not the primary seal.
This was before frameless shower screen glass went in.
No leaks, won't ever be any leaks.
