Shower tray leak

When I did my bathroom shower install I used proper water resistant backing boards.

Then a specialist shower waterproof tanking tape. It is very sticky and attaches to the outside of the tray. Then offer the tray into place and stick it to the backing board. This allows for a permanent flexible water proof seal behind the tray and lapped up the wall. (Black tape just visible below)



Then I overlaid shower boards and decorative mould resistant silicone. The silicone is therefore not the primary seal.



This was before frameless shower screen glass went in.

No leaks, won't ever be any leaks.

That looks really posh, but when it comes to domestic stuff I'm more of a throw a cubicle in quick and get back to fun stuff in the workshop sort of person

I googled what I meant on the tray with lips, and apparently its official name is a shower tray with a upstand.
Linky, just seems like a better way to design things so they dont need careful sealing or tapes to me having it built as part of the tray. I can't see why trays arent built like this by default.

They aren't like thay by default since the 80's

Thing is, it's easy and cost effective to do the job right with any tray. But contractors and DIY'rs throw them in with no thought then wonder why they leak after.

I used a shower board in my holiday cottages, it has ali trims including a bit of angle around the tray which is in effect the seal, works really well. And easy to clean!

They do steel baths with upstands too but it's special order usually.

Think as said above...don't rely on any one method of sealing. With mine I sealed the tray to the tanked wall ...then I sealed again over the tiles too.

They also now do a tape system which sticks to the bath edge...I used that on the last bath shower...will see how good it works!

How thick is the tape?
Just incase my walls aren't perfectly flat...

Probably about 2mm for the rubber tape and the tar type adhesive is another 2mm say on lower edge

Yeah, I'm also a fan of the upstand shower trays. In my experience, most doors and sides leak because people silicone the inside edges. Most extruded aluminium shower frames are designed to expect a bit of water in them that then has to find it's way out via the inside edges...or the outside edges if the insides are silicones. I "repaired" my folk's shower simply by removing the internal silicone back along.
